Methane clathrate deposits. The tundra and taiga are filled with them. As are the silt deposits where every alluvial fan meets the continental shelf. If you understood that, you know how truly terrifying they are. To everyone else: They are the "wild card" in global climate change. We don't know how much of it there is or how susceptible to sublimation and *drastically* supercharge global warming.

For those of you who do not follow the IPCC on climate change there has been many studies like the "Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC)" which talk about the dangers of a feedback loop as the permafrost melts and releases immeasurable amounts of methane which is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term to increase global warming. Basically it could set off a chain of events which are not solvable. Sleep tight now kids.
