Might ba an unpopular and depends on a company you work for opinion but office work is often some work, some small talk, break, wait for something, read something, some more work etc. Gaming is way more intense and requires constant focus, constant clicking and your arms are locked in the same position for hours. Office work is more mentally straining though especially in a stressful environment.

If you're working 8 hours straight something is fucked up, you're supposed to take regular breaks and walk around a bit.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am viewing this from the office via VPN to a VM I run from home... so yeah...

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, there is a reason you are supposed to take some break every hour at work..

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This only applies for WFH, RTO is obviously safer!!

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You just gotta lock in

My office job supports my family, and I generally like the work as we help people find affordable housing. But yes, sitting all day gets brutal. Recently I started walking outside during lunch breaks instead of sitting and eating. It makes a huge difference for my daily motivation, and the fresh air really helps my brain make it through the afternoon. I'd still rather be home cooking all day, but it was simple solution to feeling heavy and sedentary for hours on end.

You shouldn't sacrifice your body for the things you want to do, only your employer overlords!

I solved all those "risks" with an expensive chair at the proper height, except "eye fatigue" whatever that is

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I really think in a better society it would be healthier in many regards to split our time between many different types of work. Twice a week you join the garbage collectors, one day a week you prepare food for your building, one day a week you do office work, half a day a week you do manual labour (et repairing roads). You might have periods where you focus on one or two but generally you go back to a more fluid work life.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not that anyone ever could but I'm sure you're meant to take a break from screens every 20 minutes when working in an office, right?

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but the break is just "focus on something that isn't the screen for like 60 seconds". Thats an eye strain thing.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My workplace has instructions for desk jockeys to get up from their desks and move about for 10 mins every hour, go grab a coffee, drink of water, or something, take your eyes off your screens and reelax them for a little while. It's a massive change from my last place.

Now, the question is: Are they accounting for what they do besides gaming? That will have a big effect on developing a condition related for repetitive motion or other factor outside of extended play sessions. Not saying they can't be negatively effecting people, but most studies that come to this conclusion do not account for other activities.

Maann... im.playing silent hill. I'm up, moving around the whole time.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Both of these things contributed to carpal tunnel and TOS for me that have been affecting me for over a year to the point where I have trouble doing more than 4-5hrs of work on any given day. But with PT, it's getting a lot better.

I cannot recommend enough that whatever activity you are doing, check your posture and stop every hour for a stretch or change in motions. Repetitive motions for long hours will wreck your body in ways you don't even realize.

I find it very indicative of society's values that the lower-paying jobs, particularly entry-level, often have a mindset of "If you don't have anything to do, I'll find something for you to do" while the higher-paying jobs are just big blocks of unscheduled time that could be spent staring at the wall if that's what you feel like doing.

Notice how much actual work gets done the higher your pay grade.

When I was in office full time about 10 years ago our team of 15 would have a daily meeting, our manager would usually have a walking meeting around the building weather permitting, when we all went wfh he set a reminder 2 times a day to step away and take a walk or play with your pets or just relax. Our team had the best metrics in the country vs the others that monitored keystrokes

I mean, to be totally fair, all the clicky-clicky action in PC gaming can be just as bad as office work if you don't take breaks. All things in moderation and remember to take stretch breaks, folks. Nearly ruined my mouse hand back when I'd play MineCraft for hours on end.

I remember some pro-gamer got some kind of clot in his leg and really dude just never got up for so long. My legs start to ache for movement after an hour or so. Ignoring bodily signals? Trying to "tough through it"?

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PC gaming is way way worse than office work in this regard. An engrossing video game will have fewer breaks and less variety of motion than pretty much any day at the office.

11 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ya but in the office I'm not moving my mouse and eyes like a coked out monkey

"Also, you don't want to work any less because that'd make you lazy and nobody would ever respect you again. Oh, and unions are stupid pointless wastes of money that don't do anything."

Sure, office work, factory work, long hours are fine. It makes great value for the shareholders!

I am sure they will all line up when I am in my deathbed to thank me for doing my reports on time.. /s fuck work

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, repetitive hand/wrist movements definitelly inly cause tendinitis when it's gaming, not while doing the same for endless hours on a production line. I remember so many hairstylists with carpal tunnel and other muscle/tendon injuries from repetitive scissor use... It's ridiculous and they don't even try to hide it anymore lol

I stay up tossing and turning at night wondering if their second yacht is gonna be okay

11 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yes you thought about their third yacht but what about their fifth yacht it's going to be severely understaffed they only have 20 employees on that one

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They are only paid 2.85 plus tops so that's barely a liss, they aren't pwople...easily replaceable

11 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Okay TO BE FAIR: that's why any decent workplace will make sure you get to take breaks, have desks that can be raised etc. I worked at an assembly line once and we had mandatory station changes every 30min to make sure we didn't get any overuse injuries.

There are plenty of other good reasons to shorten the work day, but even a 3h workday can't save you if you only sit in one spot/ only do one movement for that entire duration.

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Those 'decent workplaces' are due to organizing labor demanding it, and also demanding lawmakers enforcing laws.

No company works out of the good of their heart. They want all the money, all the time, instantly. They will grind every body they can to achieve it.

11 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh, I agree.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, even 100% profit-oriented companies will take care of their office staff if they're smart. It keeps them productive and motivated. Pre-covid, Facebook HQ was like a literal country club.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>if they're smart

Yeah, I'd like to work at one of these mythical smart companies.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like Facebook? There are certainly perks, but just because they invest in worker productivity doesn't make them the perfect workplace.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

'there are certainly perks to working at the company actively trying to dismantle democracy' isn't the flex you think it is.

59 year old auto technician here. No back problems at all. Get out from behind the desk and do something else.

11 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 16

Very much depends on what the work is. I worked alongside baggage handlers at the airport and watched the repetitive stress destroy some people. Good lifting practices help, but right hours a day of the same stresses deteriorates a person.

Having different kinds of movements and tasks is super important.

11 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yup, I also pedal an under the desk stationary bike an hour to an hour and a half a day. My husband is often admiring my legs and booty. https://media1.giphy.com/media/MippJS279BfQA/200w.webp?cid=a57373e5ia4pkj4docsh6ixfthvrokl46vyoypbk1ery417u&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=200w.webp&ct=g

I'm glad it's working out well for you, but there isn't one prescription that would be right for everyone. I would absolutely HATE being an automotive technician. I love my computer programming job that keeps me behind a desk most of the day. I still take breaks and walk my dogs and go to parks and play racquetball and swim when I'm not working.

11 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The job itself sucks...lol

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sitting or standing for 8 hours are both bad. The key is being mobile and switching.

11 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Stand in the same 10 sqf doing repetitive motions, got it!

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What?

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ha. I am currently alone in my office with a last minute week long manufacturing training popping up next week DURING a global CEO and North American president visit happening at the same time.

Can’t get up from my desk without intense pain.. and now pain shooting down my leg.

Video games never treated me so badly.

11 months ago | Likes 272 Dislikes 2

If you're alone in the office, a quick wank is in order. Just saying.

11 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Video games would never do that to you.

This is your body telling you you're breaking down and dying. Listen to it.

11 months ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 0

I'm listening, but I can't do nothin about it. Can't have ret AND food after all.

11 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ìm listening, it said work or mobility. You have to choose. I said but I need to be mobile to work, body said..."choose wisely." I took the day off. And I have no Pto left

11 months ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

You need to be even more mobile.
Like maybe a few thousand miles across the ocean living in a civilised society that doesn't overwork it's people to disability and/or death.

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Pain in your legs could be a DVT you better start getting up and stretching more often.

11 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I do have desk work. But I work in a technical lab. On my feet constantly. It’s overworking my body to meet the expectations.. when I’m alone.

11 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Ah probably just soreness then. I'm sorry but at least you won't die from that.

Maybe try stretching your piriformis muscle. I had something similar, this helped me. Good luck stranger!

I do #3 at my desk all the time. But also lots of water (piss breaks help remind me to get up and walk) and resistance training at home to try and undo the damage if sitting all day
