My 2 year old would say “ocean water!” But in toddler it sounds like “oh shit water!”

It would have looked better without the paint

Skipped a few steps. How did they do the blue dye? How was it finished? I assume spray but that often has to be sanded between coats. And sanding that would be a nightmare.

It's *pine* with me, if it's *oak* with you

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Step 1; carve a chopping board? Step 2; oh it’s finished…..

I'd kind of like to play with little plastic boats on that.

Soak logs in wood

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The wood bleeds blue when you strip its flesh off.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They actually tried to make a cutting board, but it went terrible.

1 year ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 2

I don't know, I think they cut that board great

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

lol. They did indeed.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Top it resin and maybe, would be honorably bad for the knife.

Soak your wood

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh damn that's what it was. I could remember. I remember the weird looking melted stump though

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice to see wood work that doesn't end with a resin pour.

1 year ago | Likes 179 Dislikes 2

Do people not like that? I've seen so many cool ones though!

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yay no fucking microplastics this time

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Because heaven forbid this piece of art gain any functionality as an end table. That would be simply terrible.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And I'm sitting here thinking "It's pretty, but it's gonna be hell for whoever has to dust. Shoulda encased it in resin or something."

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I wonder how the light properties would differ if it were in resin? Also, counterpoint, that would collect a lot of dust in the waves, so I'd probably prefer it in resin for lower maintenance.

Wood worker here. Things im sooo tired of: epoxy, rubio monocoat, people claiming they are good products...i dont care if it was on blacktail studio. I dont care if you put ceramic finish over it It's like people just can't see through the thin vail of marketing.

Impress me with: processing your own wood, doing structural inlays, using true oils. I personally like a little polyurethane in mine.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm a recreational woodworker and the epoxy stuff is just NOT my thing. Why can't people just appreciate the wood???

I just had an interview with a company that had a river table in their conference room. It took everything I had not to comment on it as I was staring at this waste of beautiful timber the entire time.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Honestly.... Why do you care? If they enjoy it and the way it looks. No one is making you buy it. You say waste, but it's getting use and presumably appreciated by those who own it. This feels like the same sorta of mentality when an old person dislikes anbd has to criticize dyed hair.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Small amendment, you're definitely allowed to had and even criticize or critique something, but it seems so much of this resin hate stuff is just "we did it better and if you try this you should feel bad for even calling yourself a maker" gatekeeping nonsense. I just do not understand why the hate is so vicious

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Why do I care. Good question. Because a part of their service is consulting on interior design and corporate fitout. The centerpiece of their base of operation is a fad that didn't age well. I actually liked the first few I saw 15 years ago but it turned into trend where every weekender with a sander and a few hours to spare was making one. If you'd like it in your dining room, you should make one and enjoy the hell out of it.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Counterpoint, while river tables can be gaudy, they also help to utilize wood that would have otherwise gone to the burn pile.

1 year ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Understand if it's not your style or if the over saturation gives you pause, but it does allow wood to be used that otherwise wouldn't.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I do woodworking as a hobby. 99% of the river table posts on r/woodworking are wood that could be used in countless other ways. I don't have the visceral hate for them that others do, but I also think people vastly underestimate what "useful" wood looks like. The reality is that those pieces of wood just don't match standard sales criteria for lumber yards, but that doesn't mean they aren't useful. Just because a board isn't 8ft long, 6" wide, and 80% clear doesn't mean it's getting burned.
