My only complaint about the Black Widow movie (and the Hawkeye series) is that they are torch-handing over movies. They never got their own proper standalone tales first. (I know why not at least for BW, fucking Ike Perlmutter)
I really enjoyed this movie. The end was absolutely absurd and Taskmaster was poorly handled but the main actors seemed to be having fun. Plus I loathed Yelena in the comics but Florence Pugh made me adore her.
Loved this. Why are we not getting "Black Widow & Hawkeye: The movie"? Or Black Widow 2 or Hawkeye series 2. Yelena and Kate were fun. Bloody "Thunderbolts*" what's the asterisk even for?
You know what's weird about Black Widow and her family? When they're not "hiding" they speak english with a thick russian accent, but when they're undercover they speak accent-free american english again. Why? If someone trains off their accent, that's just how you speak. As an ESL person, you don't "put back on your accent" when you're relaxing.
Thought so too at first but now I don't believe so. Because there are moments when they actually *do* speak russian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBdMa-SlWlM so that makes the russian accent scenes just read as "thick russian accent" not "the russian accent symbolises them speaking russian".
it could be like: actual russian (to establish that they're speaking russian) -> transition to russian-accented english, but actually still speaking russian 'for real,' instead of having to force audiences to read extended dialogue subtitles (because Americans dislike subtitles I guess)... if that makes sense. I haven't watched the movie (yet) so I don't know well this theory holds up.
It's not realistic, but it communicates to the audience that the character feels safe and relaxed. It's a common trope for the foreign spy character. They can speak the language perfectly, but they do so as the character they have created for their job, with their accent and linguistic quirks.
So when they drop the façade, they adopt more comfortable, personal mannerisms.
I certainly recognize this when I speak English. I have an accent with friends, but I can read the BBC news if I try.
Movie was still shit tho, no tension, bad writing, and pacing. I mean they treated blackwidow as a side character for two avengers movie then tried to make us care by giving us some slop.
If you haven't done so already, you should see her in Lady Macbeth (nothing to do with Shakespeare). It's such a good film and she absolutely carries it.
Honestly the worst part of the movie was the timing, why care about blackwidow? She ain’t going to die or suffer lasting repercussions because you know what she is like a few months later. Would have been better released before she died, would also have been better if their could have been another movie with these two, Pugh worked because she was calling out BW while BW was beginning to open up in a mentor role
100 percent. Was watching this for the first time with my wife and couldn't believe this didnt come out around the time as Civil War / Winter Soldier. Would have done very well.
It was supposed to be released May 2020, but, y'know, Covid. So they delayed it (multiple times), and eventually released it on July 2021 in some theatres and on Disney+ Premier Access (you had to pay $30 extra to see it). ScarJo sued because a simultaneous theatrical and home release wasn't in her contract.
Indeed. Frankly should have been one of the Phase 1 or Phase 2 movies. Ant Man having a film and a SEQUEL before the movie of one of the core avengers is a travesty. Black Widow wasn't perfect but still pretty fun, worst parts were her father and completely changing Taskmaster into a mute woman for like... zero reason, when Taskmaster is a fairly cool villain in his own right.
It really is amazing in this day and age, you can have a literal history of any given character to pull from and somewhere, someone at the helm said, 'make them mute'. I enjoyed this film, but I agree that the timing is its greatest sin. How much better would Endgame would have been if this was sliced inbetween?! The second sin was not giving a moment of silence before another quip was thrown in. Shut the fuck up and be sad for a minute! Solemn are fine Marvel let them happen
It's one of many reasons Marvel films have become so exhausting; everyone has to quip. I call it the Marvel effect because unfortunately it spread to other franchises like Star Wars who started quipping and it just feels out of place. And even in Marvel, it makes sense for some characters like Iron Man but everyone does it now and it really undercuts more dramatic and emotional moments.
Was this movie worth the watch? They started to lose me after Thanos chilling in his garden, whichever movie that was. I was 100% on board til then. But I could be convinced to run down to blockbuster and pick this one up for the weekend if you guys thought it was good. Opinions?
I couldn’t tell you what happens in each movie. They all blend together. So if there’s one event I want to watch I have to google it to figure out which movie it is 😅
No it was pretty mediocre. Its worth watching on TV if bored. It isnt worth going out of your way to find and rent. This clip is quite literally the best bits of the film.
I think it was worth the watch, but nothing to write home about. Spoilers for Infinity War: Excluding the post-credit scene, it really should have been released before Infinity War. Trying to make audiences care about someone after they die is a questionable artistic choice. I don't understand why they gave everyone but Black Widow and Hawkeye one or several movies.
Skip it. This is not a black widow movie, this is a black widow sister movie. Black widow is dead, her final appearance will be this movie, and they do not give her a good "end" to her story. Just instead try to get a new black widow with the sister to carry on that sort of character.
I liked it, it wasn’t trying to match the wow factor that ‘End Game’ had, smaller scale story made it more interesting. I think the other films after end game came out tried to be as ‘Epic’ as endgame which they couldn’t really make work. A lot of people hated it though, but it’s like the only post endgame film I can watch more than once.
It's honestly quite terrible, and it doesn't help that it comes after the big avengers finale that was endgame. It was clearly written to be a "before" story. What should be a bond-esque spy thriller, is instead yet another giant spectacle fight, where un-powered people are fighting super villains while falling from an exploding flying sky-castle. It's okay if you want fights and silly accents for two hours.
This is the last Marvel movie I watched that I really enjoyed, I don't bother anymore. They jumped the shark like most of the other chain movies. For God's sake, stop the Star Wars destruction!
I’m just warning you that there are many people that will attack you for saying such things. While I agree with you many people don’t care about the destruction of the franchise.
I don’t like their use of Taskmaster. The revenge plot was fine, but I felt like they should have saved them for a more street level threat. Have them as the big bad of a Black Widow, Captain America, Daredevil, Moon Knight, Luke Cage, Elektra, type team up movie/series to show off how he can swap up his fighting styles on the fly. Also the “brain chip” kinda felt like a cop out to me, diminishing the “cool factor” of the powers. Just my opinion.
I agree on that front. Task Master has powers! And they're debilitating! He copies moves but literally forgets actual events. He tells someone who might be his daughter to be careful, and that he'll forget they even met the next week. He's really cool, sometimes funny, and oddly tragic.
I think-- the movie tries to go too sympathetic villain with Task Master and it kinda ruins the character
No. They did genderswap Task Master, but he was never the bad guy's kid. He was a former agent of shield turned mercenary who made his money training goons for other groups, sometimes getting in on the action himself if paid enough
