This is one of those things that I've added to my browser bookmarks. Too important to lose.

I can't believe blender isn't on there. it's literally free maya. so good.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I won't forget this one...this time I'm going to favorite it, and I'll refer back to it once I'm home. This time will be different...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Look at this nigga talking about 3D modeling and fully ignoring Blender..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Will definitely read this here in a few. Thanks 8)

Friendly reminder that the creator of Stardew Valley did not know how to program C# when he started.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not to mention Valves Hammer editor SDK for all Source based games and mods. Counterstrike maps are fun and easy practice.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Hammer looks and works like it just stepped out of 1995. Wretched thing. CryEngine's Sandbox is a great editor (but on a terrible engine)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol that’s because it did I remember messing with it in the quake 2 days I think it was called Foundry back then.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve seen some actually decent games made on the easier tools, Undertale was made in GameMaker after all

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's usually the opposite on imgur - someone posts a fact-filled post full of info and we turn it into a shitpost with smartass comments.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Y'all are forgetting one of the best engines out there - Godot is amazing for both 2D and 3D, and it has visual scripting for non coders!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Awesome post op

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's easy to make a game. It is hard to make a good one. But good luck.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My advice is to get something basic and fun quickly and build on that. If it isn't fun when simple, drop it. Fail early

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What the fuck, FL Studio isn’t free? I mean, I don’t know anyone’s who’s actually “paid” for it, but still...

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

They have a demo version that's free, but you can't save your projects.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think you can save, but not load, but its been ages since I used the free version

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You are correct.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is everything I've been looking for.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Forgot about blender and Godot besiy that it's a good list

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

I really tried to love Godot, but I met one too many "sometimes this won't work, restart Godot if this happens" disclaimers in tutorials

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

welcome to free software the dark souls of programs

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tried to use blender one time. Naw.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think I'm biased now, but after using Maya for a few years, trying to learn blender feels painful.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a little irritated by the use of "tenant" instead of "tenet".

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

After looking at "Crystal Warrior Ke$ha" & other Twine "games" I'm pondering wether the 1st response is disingenuous or just being ironic.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Eww what was that?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Twine is terribad, and all "games" made from it are genuinely shite. They're like visual novels, but without the "visual." 0 effort.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Really. I don't think many people call Flash or Powerpoint presentations "games", so I don't know how Twine's would make the cut.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a guy who really cant really brain, GameMaker is amazing for learning how shit works. HeartBeast on youtube has a great tutorial series

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

And friendly cosmonaut and Shawn Spaulding and pixelated Pope! All great teachers!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah... Fl Studios is "free"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean you do kinda have to know at least a bit about computers to use most of those. But they're good places to start.

8 years ago | Likes 267 Dislikes 2

“Without knowing shit about computers” followed by 7 pages of stuff I don’t understand

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

It should have been "Knowing shit about code" but even then they still suggest 'learn to code', they could have said board games.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For real though lol. Ad someone who has made games in unity, you better know how to write code. You can make a cube slide around otherwise

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

And that's about it. Unreal has some visual scripting that might be easier, but Unity requires some real programming chops.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Have you seen the games on steam? I beg to fucking differ.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I think you just made his point? You need to know what you're doing to make something good in unity

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Start with Scratch. Anyone can do it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Shameless plug for a VT CPE research professor that created gamechangineer. It’s an “engine” that allows you to write in plain English 1/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And it converts the English to code and creates your game. Slight learning curve in the formatting otherwise it’s pretty fun to mess with 2/

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want to make a game that isn't shit-tier quality, you're still going to have to learn quite a bit about computers.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yup. You can't just buy models and use them in a tutorial and expect creative or financial success.

Quick note to this post, UDK/UE4 doesn't support Unreal script anymore. It can be done with blueprints(node based programming) or 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or the hell known as c++. Good language but if only that had documentation

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The UE Docs has some slight explanation and some good tuts on there from Epic to understand it better.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm using Udemy to learn C++ in Unreal atm

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@TheAmazingPencil The academy at UCF I want to get into requires projects in a portfolio to be made in C++ or (other language I can't member

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

C++ (CPP) for extreme customization and control over doing exactly what you want to do! (You can check out my convo with Daniel Kaplan 2/?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

about what I'm using to learn) and it's a really great engine and makes learning programming fun again! 3/3

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

RPGmaker is also good but you have to buy it or steal it so grain of salt.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was kind of disappointed to see RPG Maker not on here. I know some people don't take it seriously but I really love it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The sad thing is that (even if you don't bring in your own assets) you can make a really good game with it. If you do bring in your own-

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

assets, you can make a masterpiece. If nothing else, it's a very good starting point, especially if you get an older one during a sale.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well i mean the tools are nice but they don't magically make though skilled you still need practice

8 years ago | Likes 134 Dislikes 3

Yes, but you can learn a lot of things by stumbling until you hit a road block, and then asking on a forum. It's not like hard coding-

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

where it's a lot of sweating before you can start doing.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Also tutorials. Unreal has a huge knowledge base. As well as maya. Two programs can be used to make a game from scratch

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you mean alot of sweating you basically start coding right away. I'm just saying don't expect your first game to be a masterpiece

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

My experience with coding (I've only ever learned C++) is there's a lot of learning language before you code anything more complex than-

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

hello world or rock paper scissors

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You're definitely correct that your first game won't be a masterpiece, but that's a given. Hell, most people in the industry recommend-

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

making something that's complete. Even if it's garbage or just one level, as long as it functions you've completed something to learn from.
