Both of us are new to Geocaching. Turns out, the outdoors is a pretty cool place to explore.

This is parenting done right! My son and I just started geocaching. We're horrible at it, but we love it!

Geocaching is an absolute blast. Out of curiosity, where are you located? I've got a couple bugs across the nation, and one that migrated

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

all the way over to Norway somehow, but it'd be cool if I met someone who grabbed one of them.

There's not much to do for "almost" free with 4 kids. We've been geocaching for almost 4 years now. Good times.....and no computers.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. This. I get so tired of my kids just wanting to be in front of a screen. I want them to breathe fresh air and step in streams

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

geocaching is a great thing. ive been doing it for 13 years and have found 2000+ caches

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've a pretty casual geocacher. Got about 50 or so finds thus far.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeahh Carolina Panther fans rocking the geocaching! There is one at queen's university, try to find it! (if you guys are in NC!)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

We are, but we're in Wake Forest. If I'm ever in Charlotte, I'll take a look

The FP is strong with this one.

There are some super-creative geocaches in Papago Park, in Phoenix AZ. Look for ones near you with lots of favorite points on their site.

Good work. How does one get into this? And what do you find?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Usually you find keychain sized trinkets and things

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Geocaching.com has all the resources. Or get the app on your phone. A little research and a good pair of trail shoes will go a long way

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I use the c:Geo Android app, uses your Geocaching.com account to see all the caches on a map, great UI

Funny story... I wasn't feeling very well yesterday, but my son made a comment about how gross it was to get muddy. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 199 Dislikes 2

Way to be there @OP ... Presence not presents...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My response: "Get your shoes on right now!" We ended up finding 6 yesterday. Little-man put 5 dirty miles on his legs and loved every second

9 years ago | Likes 202 Dislikes 2

OK, but how do I get that dope Kung fu panda shirt

HA!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's awesome, OP. I just planted my first cache. It's a fun hobby.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Good on you!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's so awesome! Way to dad!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You seem like a good dad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP, how old is your kid?? I've been thinking about trying geocashing with my map-obsessed 3-year-old

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He'll be 6 in a month or so. I don't know your kid, but at 3, you're doing it more to get them acclimated to being outside.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least with my son, 5 was the perfect age. Any younger and he would've burned out on it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That wasn't funny in the slightest

9 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 17

true, but I have heard many worse stories told under the context of "funny story". So I still can appreciate it.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Totes excited about doing stuff like this. I've got a few more years to go, he's only two.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same. Mine's only 9 months but as soon as he understands presents and can walk: that's us!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I take my 2 year old daughter out geocaching with my 7 month old. We just do more simple ones.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I super want to get into geocaching with my kids (6&8) both for fun exploration and to teach orienteering/map reading. No idea how to start.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

So easy! https://www.geocaching.com/guide/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks! :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Geocaching.com or download the app. Since this got so many up votes, maybe I'll put together a post soon on how to get started.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yes please! Geocaching is fun. More people should be able to play too!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would be awesome! I have the app but I'm still kind of confused on where to begin. It seems to assume a basic familiarity I don't have.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Use the app to locate a cache (some aren't available unless you subscribe), then just go out and try to find whatever is hidden 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some require clues, most have swag (take something, leave something), most have a log book to sign. Read up on it, it's a lot of fun
