I found out that I have this... I used to get called a picky eater, but this weekend I found out my whole life I've lived with this. Putting this here admittedly for the trophy but also so I can promise myself to fight this thing as hard as I can.

As someone with autism (diagnosed at 51y young), textures and flavors can and will ruin my apatite. Chewing on something for 15sec. and still can't swallow it. It made my life not easier but more understandable.

I've had patients with ARFID in the past. With a good therapist and dietitian, you will learn how to work within this disorder. It's not about overcoming it but about pushing your boundaries just a little bit more each day. You can do this.

Fight it hard, eat everything you see!

I'm approximately 99.9% sure I can be diagnosed with this, as well as my child. The part that really resonated for me when I first found out it exists is the concept of safe food. Like pistachios aren't a safe food, because they're green. Green olives as well, but I like most other green foods. It's completely irrational but I can't change it.

I spent ages trying to find it and all I found were people telling me to shut up and eat it because I am an adult and I need to eat food like an adult.... Then I went to try miso soup because I dream of a trip to Japan and food is the scary part for me. Well I dissected it... Broth pass, onions pass, tofu pass, and even the seaweed passed! Then I put it together and couldn't swallow it.

It didn't make sense. It doesn't make sense... But with that symptom I finally figured it out.

I struggle with eating sometimes.
Getting sick from hunger, but not wanting to eat from feeling sick.
It's like my mouth doesn't want to chew whatever is.

It's wild I just stumbled across this. I've never been able to explain why "I'm not hungry" (even if I am). Reading this made something click. Chewing feels icky! I'm not picky with food, and I enjoy cooking, but eating can go sit in a corner. Maybe that's why I like soup so much. Thank you strangers!

Eating too little? Disorder.

Eating too much? Just put the fork down, fatty.

Society really sucks sometimes.

I'm glad you were able to get this figured out though, @OP

Thanks... It's going to be a long road to make this manageable

I can recommend cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), but it's not easy and facing your daemons can be.. Exhausting.. But, you can do it!
