A lesser known comic that doesn't require 60 years of backstory to enjoy.

Runaways

Runaways is marvel comic run that happened a few years ago, it's got a cult following but never "took off" the way a lot of comics do. All the characters are introduced in the series and their adventures are more or less self-contained meaning you can read them without running to wikipedia or having to read decades of previous comics.

The basic premise is a group of rich kids accidentally discover their parents are super villains, and in uncovering their parents true nature discover hidden powers they themselves possess. They decide it is their responsibility to stop what their parents are doing. Truth be told however they mostly just try to get by, they're definitely good people but they're not exactly "heros"

While presenting the obvious themes of teen rebellion and self discovery it also provides a host of loveable, if flawed characters. At first glance the Runaways themselves can seem like archetypes but they are absolutely written with depth.

One of my favorite things about Runaways as a series is though it mostly stays out of the main Marvel storylines the span of powers the main characters have are practically an origin story sample platter for the Marvel Universe.

If you've been looking to get into comics or if you're just looking for something new.

Or if you're like me and just love teen drama with super powers, I suggest Runaway

(if you do decide to look into it note that I don't mean the "Battle World Runaways" which was A: short and 2: bad)

(also Hulu has commissioned a Runaways TV show based off the comics to come out sometime next year which is super exciting)

awesome

Damn, didn't know a show was getting made, and now I can't wait for it!

Right! I'm glad it's a series and not a movie, hopefully they'll have the time space to write these characters the way they deserve, it's1/2

too bad Joss Whedon had that falling out with Marvel, his arc was some of the best writing the comics ever got. 2/2

The non network marvel series have been amazeballs, so I have lots of faith in the results. Thanks for posting this. Runaways is too good.

Agreed! I might do another one for Supurbia, another series which really deserves to be a bigger hit than it is
