American Citizens receive email from the Department of Homeland Security telling them to leave the U.S. “immediately” because their “parole” was terminated.

A doctor born in the United States says she received an email from federal immigration authorities demanding that she leave the country immediately.

Lisa Anderson, a physician from Cromwell, Connecticut, told NBC Connecticut on Wednesday that she recently received a letter from the Department of Homeland Security telling her, “It is time for you to leave the United States."

Immigration authorities have been pushing noncitizens to leave of their own volition, or “self-deport,” as the number of deportations remains at similar levels to last year.

But Anderson, 58, was born in Pennsylvania and is a U.S. citizen.

"The language seemed pretty threatening to whomever it might actually apply to," she said.

A senior DHS official told NBC News that the department has been issuing the notices to individuals who do not have lawful status to remain in the country.

"If a non-personal email — such as an American citizen contact — was provided by the alien, notices may have been sent to unintended recipients," the officials said. "CBP is monitoring communications and will address any issues on a case-by-case basis."

"To be clear: If you are an alien, being in the United States is a privilege — not a right," the officials added. "We are acting in the best interest of the country and enforcing the law accordingly."

The email to Anderson comes days after a Boston immigration attorney — who is also a U.S. citizen — received the same email from DHS, telling her to leave the country within seven days. The attorney, Nicole Micheroni, told MSNBC that as of Tuesday, federal officials had not followed up.

Pointing to the Boston email, Anderson said that she does not "have anything to do with immigration."

Anderson has been carrying her U.S. passport on her at all times since receiving the email and is seeking an immigration attorney.

“It does make me concerned there’re a lot more people out there like me who probably also thought this was spam, who probably didn’t realize, ‘I have a problem,’” she said.

A Massachusetts-born immigration attorney is questioning how many people are being wrongly instructed by the federal government to self-deport after she says she received an email from the Department of Homeland Security telling her to leave the U.S. “immediately” because her “parole” was terminated.

Nicole Micheroni shared the email to her Bluesky account Friday, stating that she knew it was sent to her in error and so wasn’t worried, “but what about the people the emails were actually aimed at?”

“It is time for you to leave the United States,” reads the email attributed to DHS, which has sent out similar versions to non-U.S. citizens who entered the U.S. using the CBP One mobile app. That app was set up during the Biden administration to facilitate border crossings before it was canceled by President Donald Trump.

Micheroni, who said she was born in Newton, works in Boston and has “no idea” how she ended up on the government’s list, was told she has seven days to leave the U.S., according to the email.

“Do not attempt to remain in the United States — the federal government will find you,” it warns.

“I’ve been here my whole life,” she told local Boston station WCVB.

A senior DHS official suggested in an email to HuffPost on Monday that Micheroni may have been inappropriately contacted because a non-U.S. citizen submitted her email to them as their own.

“CBP used the known email addresses of the alien to send notifications. If a non-personal email — such as an American citizen contact — was provided by the alien, notices may have been sent to unintended recipients. CBP is monitoring communications and will address any issues on a case-by-case basis,” the official said.

Micheroni advised anyone who received a similar email or who is concerned about their immigration status to seek legal aid, while adding that someone’s parole being revoked is not the same thing as a deportation order.

“There are a lot of people within their rights to stay here that are being told to leave, and a lot of people don’t know the difference,” Micheroni told WCVB.

"If you do not depart the United States immediately you will be subject to potential law enforcement actions that will result in your removal from the United States — unless you have otherwise obtained a lawful basis to remain here," the message sent by the Department of Homeland Security and obtained by CBS News reads.

The notification encourages migrants to sign up for self-deportation through the very same app that allowed them to enter the U.S. It is now called CBP Home.

"Again, DHS is terminating your parole. Do not attempt to remain in the United States — the federal government will find you," the notice says. "Please depart the United States immediately."

The Trump administration has begun revoking the legal status of migrants who entered the U.S. under a Biden administration process powered by a smartphone app formerly known as CBP One, instructing them to leave the country immediately or face arrest and deportation.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the status cancellations, saying in a statement to CBS News that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem "has full authority to revoke parole."

"Canceling these paroles is a promise kept to the American people to secure our borders and protect national security," the department added. "Formal termination notices have been issued, and affected aliens are urged to voluntarily self-deport using the CBP Home App. Those who refuse will be found, removed, and permanently barred from reentry."

“Anyone who has received this may still have options & should talk to an immigration lawyer NOW,” she wrote on her Bluesky account.
