Think of the poor millionaires

Well heck, guess since I made FP I should provide context, huh https://gizmodo.com/twitch-reportedly-considering-cutting-streamer-pay-to-b-1848848610

I'm an affiliate and I'd rather have more than one person watch me than anything. I have a job for money anything I get extra is just that.

They did that because they were worth it. Brought people to the site who then found other partners and subscribed. Still true, so...

Jeff Bezos is an Asshole

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Imagine getting a 30% pay cut all of a sudden

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What a nice way to pay the guys raking in hundreds of thousands of viewers

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Twitch: Listen guys... I feel you, really I do. But the thing is... we only made $2.3B last year, and we promised out shareholders $2.9B...

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

...you can see how we didn't have a choice, right?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'm small time and I still have to split it 50/50. And I'm forced to run adds for like 3 cents a month. Youtube seems to be the future/shrug

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of the top streamers actually negotiated contracts with Twitch prior. This change really only impacts medium and smaller creators.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Ah, the way it should be: bleed dry the middle and poors, but leave the wealthiest and most successful with more than they could ever use.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not even that they negotiated them, they are just older as that used to be the normal cut till Twitch dropped it.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Corporate greed is out of control

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the perk of being an older streamer they were still on old contract agreements.Twitch is just going through & bringing them to standard

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You forgot the other half of this where they're going to increase the # of ads shown to viewers.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you get into being a 'streamer' anyways? Some of the stuff I watch for hints on games just sucks but it's all Youtube.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get a Twitch account, download OBS, put your stream key into OBS and start streaming. Get 50 followers and you can start getting subs

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's simple you just start doing it, if you have something that can stream you can do it right now. {PC or Phone} that's it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They already lowered what I got, and I'm clearly not a top streamer XD But I don't stream for money so idc.

3 years ago | Likes 155 Dislikes 5

Its not always about you not getting paid to me it is that other people are making a profit off me and i get nothing

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's true. When you sub to an affiliate, twitch get 50% of your money. If you want to support a streamer, make a direct donation.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The fact that most people don't care is why they get away with it. It's kinda part of the problem.

3 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Well I can tell you that most other streamers I talk to really do care. But tbf, if you want to help a streamer, make a direct donation. 1/

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

They get all the money from it. Bits and subs are taxed to death by twitch especially for affiliates.

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

It’s interesting how many of you think all streamers are millionaires

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah like <1% are actually rolling in it…just like actors. Vast majority are not making meaningful money

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Constant 100+ streamers? Congratulations, you are the literal 1%

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How? 100+ subs a month right? so <$500 a month are the literal 1%?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Top 1% for most viewers. Not subs, viewers. 99% get below that.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can thank Jeff Bezos for that because unions are going to eat away his own profits.

3 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 2

They're not. He's still going to be impossibly rich. He might use it as an excuse but nothing will change his material conditions.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Doesn't matter he is pissed he is going to take it out on someone who else but the streamers

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He will do whatever he wants whenever he wants. If his best excuse was "eh, fuck it that's why" well then that's what he'd go with.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He'll still be just as rich, Amazon itself won't be. But Jeff will take his standard cut no matter what.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Amazon will never be "less rich" than they currently are. I'm more concerned about that island they stash all the $ on. It might sink.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's why you diversify your off shore tax havens. Just encase they suddenly change their tax laws.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Come on guys, Twitch only made like 2.3 billion revenue in 2020... You can't expect them to share with the cash cows.

3 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 1

That's the revenue not the profit, there's very little profit for streaming platforms because the overheads are so high. It's why ->

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

Targe0 gets it. I worked at twitch and the hosting costs were insane. Also product development, marketing, etc. very little actual money

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

There's a reason why online video basically wasn't a thing till Google bought Youtube. They were able to throw money at the problem. ->

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

And with that the tech developed and it became easier to set up. But still only major corporations can eat the running costs.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

most of them aren't profitable till they sell the user bases meta data. From ads and subs along most wouldn't make a profit. Now I am ->

3 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Not saying Twitch could not do a much fairer job with their payment splits, just adding the context that their profit isn't their revenue.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

That is really stupid of them. The top streamers are only Twitch exclusive because they have a contract with them for 70%.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I don’t think it’s stupid. The overall revenue pie has gotten so much bigger that there is more to share now. 1/

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Would you rather have 70% of $10 or 50% of $20

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You don't think it has anything to do with the multi-million dollar signing bonus? Or a nice cut of the ad revenue? for sure not just the 70

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That 70% soon to be 50% was the flat cut. So any money made from Twitch from ads or subs or bits was split by it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Twitch's ad cut to partners is hot garbage compared to basically every other platform.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not really, Twitch is the only place that's really viable for streaming. Youtube is the next best and even it falls short. If you want ->

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

to do long form streaming Twitch is basically the only place that's worth a dam viewer wise.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Yup. They’ve essentially beat out Msft, fb and YouTube gaming are nonexistent. Once streamers have no options, you can command costs.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yep, best any of them can do is Youtube and that has its own issues as YouTube has plenty of problems of its own. Basically a 2 horse race.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Maybe the top streamers should look at other platforms?

3 years ago | Likes 215 Dislikes 2

I mean Twitch is basically encouraging it because they're also dialing down on the exclusivity clauses.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Could lead to it if twitch isn't careful. For a while they felt untouchable bc even as the biggest streamers were getting millions to move>

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To mixer or Facebook, the viewers weren't following. So twitch got the vibe streamers need them more than vice versa. But it backfired>

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When they recently tried to get the biggest streamer to agree to more hrs a month than he was comfortable with and he successfully >

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Moved to YT without a viewership drop. So they are gonna have to be more reasonable with negotiations.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who was that?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just go to only fans. "Battle toads speedrun one tit out" or whatever

It alright, battleroads is hard bit I'm sure with practice you can beat it

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That, that might work.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Noone wants to see my tit. It's hairy and masculine.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Really? Mine too! There are dozens of us! DOZENS!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

SFW onlyfans are allowed!

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Allowed, but we're not encouraging it.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Got fucking damn it.. I'd watch that, wouldn't pay for it, but I'd watch it.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would watch the fuck out of that

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Well, I could try streaming it. But I'm not good at Battletoads. And being a man, my tits are small and hairy.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Like Mixer? Facebook is a cancer that needs to be nuked, and youtubes streaming is meh at best.

3 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

Mixer was killed 2 years ago.

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

That's the point. There are no other platforms.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Trovo

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Could go to floatplane. yeah just go to floatplane.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

While thats a fantastic idea, thats currently subscriber only, and a ton of streamers want people to be able to watch and chat for free

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh so its actually a terrible idea, cool.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are removing the exclusivity along with this. So they take a 20% cut but can stream simultaneously on any number of platforms.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Hmm that sounds very much like a legal problem. Ie they figured out they are breaking the law so are pre-empting suits.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

There's nothing illegal about exclusivity clauses. Damn near every TV show and movie has them for instance.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Not sure what law or if it is about exclusives. But its an odd move. Maybe a monopoly lawsuit or something. No idea just spittballing

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the US. There is nothing illegal about exclusivity clauses like Twitch's in the US.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Are they illegal elsewhere? Sounds like it's a negotiated contract for a higher cut of the profit in exchange for exclusive right to streams

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Show me a law where it's illegal (actually link to it). Because it's EXTREMELY common. Do not confuse exclusivity with non-compete.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

top streamers be like:

3 years ago | Likes 255 Dislikes 9

Top streamers make between 3 and 9.5 mil per year. They make 28.5% less now. 855k for the people make 3 mil. Anyone would be pissed

3 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 9

What? I must not be anyone.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah but dont they also stream like at least 6-10 hours

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Except most of them have contracts with Twitch for exclusivity and 70%. They can and will go to the highest bidder.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

It should also be noted that those "top streamers" are VERY few in number. Like less than a hundred, maybe even fewer.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You're right, I looked at the top 10 for my numbers.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It should also be noted that not all of their income is purely in subs, and that not purely the crazy top get the 70/30 split.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I'm including that income in my count.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The downvoters are forgetting that millionaires are still upper middle class. The problem is that this policy change hurts everyone.

3 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 18

I ain't getting shit for streaming

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

99% ppl dont

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And that many of them employ other people to edit content for them. It's not just one person affected.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I cannot fucking believe you have even gotten this many people to upvote this tripe. Upper middle class? Gtfo with this horseshit.

3 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 11

Dude 3 mil here isn't even a house. Maybe a nice apartment

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Except they're earning it yearly. How often do you make your houses mortgage in a year?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Definitely not upper middle class, but twitch streamers aren't "rich" like billionaires who prey off the blood of children in mines.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

Twitch is strangely one of the most ethical places to get a job if you ignore the child blood of Amazon which owns it.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Where I live, that's legitimately within that tier. Cost if living is so high that wages are higher. Min wage starts at $15, still low

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
