The rhythm strip below is asystole or a flatline. When you defibrillate, or shock, a patient you are attempting to reset the electricity in the heart to a normal rhythm. Asystole has no electrical impulses therefore you cannot shock it.

Therefore any movie in which they shock this makes me cringe up tighter than some peoples butt holes around kylecorn.

Yes this is whining, no I'm not sorry.

Yeah you restart a heart by punching their chest and slapping them around a bunch and yelling at them, right?

It's even worse when this is accompanied by a huge needle to the chest.

Yeah just like movies with Spaceships and Superheroes. I reckon that shit isn't 100% truthfully accurate either.

Nobody tell OP they make movies about impossible shit like dragons and ghosts and space battles and talking animals.

How about when they dig out a bullet?

So strange for an industry that prides itself on realism

We have an automatic one at our work that only shocks if it detects the right rhythm... because none of us are medical doctors

Wait... so you can only defibrillate if there is a heartbeat? So you can only do chest compressions till you get the heartbeat going?

Fibrilation is where the cardiac muscles become confused and spasm, not really pumping blood but still pulsating. Defib overrides the (1/2)

But only defibrillate if the heartbeat is dangerously irregular?

This seems like a dangerous thing for hollywood to lie about.

fibrillation and basically 'resets' the heart. Its extreamly dangerous and should only be done as last resort.

So stick to call 911 and then begin compressions till emts arrive. Got I.
