Best "flat earth" debunk I have heard is if the Earth was flat, by now we'd have had Russians taking selfies while hanging off the edge.
chuck227
Germany lost so how did that work for them.

WE ARE GOING BACKWARDS! FUCKING BACKWARDS

ERATOSTHENES WAS GREEK
WhattaYaLookingFor
Eratosthenes was Greek.
JokeDestroyer
And lived around 200 BC. Mammoths were well extinct.
meredithmoderate
I can’t imagine more than three or four people believe the earth is flat. They just get a lot of press.
KNDBS
Eratosthenes was greek tho, not Egyptian he lived in Egypt (in a time where it wa sunder greek control), but he was greek also he didn't
Live in 3750 BC he lived from 276 BC to 194 BC.
Also note that Eratosthenes didn't figure out the Earth was round, he was the first one to make an accurate measurement of the Earth.
WilliamKeith
Right, it was a standard Greek argument that the Earth's shadow on the Moon is always a circle during lunar eclipses, never an angled disk.
heyopeps
It's the middle ages all over again.
DaydreamingInsomniac
The digital dark age...
Unfortunately.
Rektastic
Flat Earthers may just be a biproduct of better medicine and technology allowing idiots to survive doing stupid things that would kill them.
benjamindco24
Social media puts a magnifying glass on the average person. The average person is pretty stupid.
muldin80
Hey think of all the things u could figure out if all u had to do was stare at a wall meltin ur ass off
IamfunatpartiesIknow
Eratosthenes was not an Egyptian, he was Greek
WoodrowWood
Just when I thought I had a handle on my stupidity...Thanks Eratosthenes, you massive ancient nerd!
PhysicsPhren
The problem is that idiots have a platform today. A nutcase in previous centuries was just disregarded. Not everyone's opinion is equal
MyPalmsSpaghettiKneesWeakArmsSpaghettiTheresVomitOnMySpaghetti
Yeah, but rather than being ignored/ discarded, the idiots of today get unreasonable amounts of followers via their platforms
Yep. They can find each other.
But it's getting increasingly difficult for natural selection to 'take care of them' in big groups :(
Beestonian
Seems a bit dodgy that Sapper will compare the best and brightest to the worst we have to offer and falsely equivocate a decline over time.
Camelspotting
Someone who "barely washes his own ass" comes across to you as the best and the brightest?

The Paris-Geschütz? From the front lines straight into Paris in a beautiful ark -- that bunch of times they didn't miss by miles, at least.

Comparing geniuses to idiots is timeless. Like a diamond.

I don't think a dirty artilleryman in 1916 would be called a genius.

U wouldn't if he tagged your assistance with one of them shells

Except diamonds are inherently unstable and eventually degrade to graphite. It just tkaes a hell of a long time.
aggregatenow
...but graphite is amazing
ksjak
At least diamonds know the Earth is round
rj9125
Taking a hell of a long time to degrade is usually a feature of stability... Everything naturally moves towards disorder, it's 1/2
A fundamental law of thermodynamics.
CutlassAndClean
Then would it be more correct to say it is as timeless as something at the end of the process, like the vacuum of space?
weirdassgifinthecomments
But that means it’s not timeless... right? All it means is timeless is a dumb saying.
I don't know, can a human really comprehend how long a million years is? Seems timeless relative to us.
Yeah, I can get behind that
wizardbutts
YEAH! GO SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS! WOO. ENTROPY
BlameBilly
ONLY IN A CLOSED SYSTEM
morelikeconsham
As a chemist, close, but not quite. Every process must increase disorder, but there is no law saying that an object has to undergo any
It's been a while since I studied it, but over long timescales systems naturally evolve towards maximum entropy, so a system with a high 1/2
Process at all. As such, there are things that are truly, objectively stable on an infinite scale. But diamond is not one of them.
KLUSTENATOR
Phrasing, on that last one.
deathloop
Lmao thanks for pointing that out

You: "Mammoth"? Me: "Let him go, he's on a roll"

Or rather... Pharoah-sing? Eh eh?
AntiDownVoteActivist
And that's why they won't let me into the natural history museum anymore :-(
Thankyouforthis
Fair enough. Mammoths have gone extinct but fucking them hasn't.
