There's alot to love about Japan and Japanese people, but I really wish they'd quit slaughtering whales an sharks.

When Aliens come to visit us and they see Two Species of relatively equal intellect, and one Is just chilling, eating, fucking, raising families. And one is actively destroying the planet, killing each other of land AND killing and eating the aquatic ones... They are gonna understandably wipe out the human race

Without large government subsidies this industry would have died off decades ago.

Their conservation status is still vulnerable, so hope the japanese take it easy with their whale research.

EDIT : Couldn't add it to the post so here. this is the actual whale. 112,6 meters long. Weight 70 tons. They used a drone to spot it. They intend to continue doing so.

112m? That's impossible, the absolute largest blue whales can be about 30m long. Did you mean the ship?

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The ship is 112 meters long and the wale weight 70 tons .

Yes sorry the ship they used to catch it

Come on Japan... you where just starting to look cool with all the video games and anime you've given us... don't do this.

They never really stopped, they are allowed a certain amount per year for "scientific" purposes

Whale hunting is a contributing factor to greenhouse gas levels, as whale poop absorbs carbon dioxide

I mean, all fishing is ruining the planet at this point. We need like a 10 year moratorium on all fishing worldwide, because we are ridiculously close to losing the largest biome on the planet. I know it's not likely to happen because so many countries depend on fishing for survival, but it's still something that needs to be done. Humanity probably won't accept the need for it until after we've invented a replacement, like a GMO watermelon that can grow tuna steaks inside of it or something.

Watermelon tuna is on my dystopian bingo card

A far worse dystopia is already here. We need to make some hard choices about our food consumption while we still have the technology and infrastructure to attempt them. It's wishful thinking to assume we can convince the world to stop eating fish entirely and we sure as hell ain't inventing Star Trek replicators to fill that need anytime soon.
