Just finished a project I've been too lazy to enact for 5 years.

Quick origin story here. Back in my home depot days, in the winter I'd stroll through the abandoned snow-covered dreamland of the outside garden department. In a pile of snow I found a large glass tube. I never knew what it was until a few weeks ago but I knew what I wanted to do with it the moment I saw it. I'm a plant nerd so naturally it was gonna be a tubular terrarium. It sat in my closet for 5 years until I finally worked up the will to enact the plan.

Since it was gonna be above my head, I wanted to know if it was tempered glass or not. I found out it's from one of those patio heaters where the flame rises up the center so it IS tempered and if it ever fell it's not too dangerous.

The feet are a piece of scrap mahogany that's been in the attic since my parents last had our old wooden boat in the water three decades ago, the endcaps are red oak, the strip across the top is imitation wood composite molding I stuck an LED light strip inside of. The shelving selection at lowes sucked so I made the shelf custom as well, also red oak. Highly pleased with the results of the terrarium and the shelf to match. A more permanent solution to the wiring is in progress.

It's MOSS! Lots of moss! About a square foot in total gathered from the shady damp spots around the house. I did the same thing as an experiment with a yankee candle jar and the moss never grew taller than an inch under bright light.

All in all, with the materials I had lying around, the rocks, the light strip, and the oak for the shelving, the project cost about $35. Not bad.

That's lovely!
