Here is my iPhone cable. The plastic sheath has broken and the braided cable covering is fraying.

These are 10mm shrink sleeves. You can get bags of these on Amazon for a couple dollars. 10mm is needed to fit over the cable plug.

I'm using two because I want the end result to be extra stiff to help protect the actual wires inside.

Using a lighter I shrank one sleeve over the damage snug against the plug end. Then I slipped another wrapper over it a bit further down to make sure I covered all of the cracked plastic. (don't touch the flame to the wrapper, just the heat right above the tip of the flame)

Throw away cable. Throw away phone. Purchase smartphone. Problem solved!

a lighter is not the proper way to use shrink tubing

Yet... that's how everyone does it, so?

A heat gun would be, but it's effective and doesn't require upsetting my coworkers with the noise.

Can you link one that isn't a 500 pack?

But it's perfect for the person who has 500 cables to fix!

I'm about to offer to patch the cables of anyone at the office who needs it. Might as well use the stuff.

Not really. Tho if the $3 for a roll of 10mm is too much, maybe a local electronics store might sell smaller bags of it.
