Lets be clear, i would never perform this way at a kids show. It's about knowing your audience and your venue. It was a bar so everyone was having a good time and nobody was uncomfortable except this one lady. Don't know why she was upset, her boyfriend was my biggest fan.

This has happened more times than i'd like to admit. I legitimately have people that think i have dark powers. I've had a person try and exorcise me, throw holy water on me, run away screaming the whole shebang. Some people just don't understand this is just for entertainment. Most are just funny, some can be dangerous.

remember i mentioned the crazies?

Ok, this one didn't happen to me but it DID happen to a buddy of mine. He is a much more successful magician than i am, having his own tv show on Discovery (Breaking Magic) and a bunch of other great successes. He was in South America promoting his show and was on a local tv show. The host told him he was going to perform a blessing on him, but it was a lie. He lit him on fire and my friend suffered bad burns on his face, hands and neck. He has since recovered and looks great and they are pursuing legal action but its a cautionary tale about the dangers of this business.

This one both cracked me up and amazed me. Occasionally you just get lucky. A small joke or little detail can take a fun trick to another level and make it a genuine miracle. My little joke was timed just right so she though i REALLY could read her mind. Let me tell you, from the little info i got in the apology, those thoughts would have made me blush too.

I used to work a lot of college gigs and in one in particular a fire alarm went off at the worst possible time. The entire crowd had to file out just minutes before the culmination of the entire show. All momentum was lost, no recovery possible, BIG let down.

Ok, this night was one of the best/most uncomfortable of my life. I was hired to do a 45 minute set for a bachelorette party and thought it would be pretty standard. I was wrong. This group was CRAZY. I ended up actually being there for almost 2 hours. From the party favors to the banter these girls were wild. I was a little uncomfortable with all the manhandling i received but tried to play it off as best i could. My ass felt like a koosh ball. I usually have cards signed to give away as souvenirs but they kept giving them back to me. I just put them in my pocket without really paying attention. At the end of the night when i was cleaning up my supplies and took a look at everything. Not only did i have more tips than the cast of magic mike but every card signed also had a phone number and a few... um.. offers. It was a unique experience but i'm not sure if it's one i would want to repeat.

Seriously, please PLEASE don't do this. My show is tailored to the crowd i'm expecting. Something that translated well for a certain distance DOESN'T for bigger crowds or larger rooms. I made it work but man i was upset. I almost refused the show but they apologized, offered to increase my fee and said it was largely because more interest was expressed. What can you do?

Okay, this one scared the hell out of me. A very stereotypical looking mob guy approached me after a show once. Asked if i had ever dealt in card games (i have). Asked if i would be interested in dealing once a week for him and his buddies. He offered me a nice retainer and it was a good deal with the stipulation that i needed to be able to keep my mouth shut about what was talked about during the game. He THEN asked me i knew how to stack the deck a little in his favor. Not much he said just enough to give him an edge. I told him i knew how but wasn't really comfortable with it. He said he would make it worth my while but just not to get caught, his associates from down state don't mess around and i wouldn't want to get caught. In the end i politely declined the offer. I like my knee caps.

Ok, i'm gonna say this once. I'm a magician, not a clown, not a balloon artist, A MAGICIAN. I know how to make ONE balloon animal, a puppy, and thats ONLY because i use it for a trick. I get the confusion but it's a stigma and a remnant of a time long ago. I was performing mostly gambling demonstrations and the like and i don't exactly keep a saw in my pants. ..giggity.

I have a good friend who is actually pretty famous for his tricks.....but he HATES it when people call him a magician. He is an Illusionist.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

A trick is something a whore does for money... or candy!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Do you have a top hat and a twirly moustache?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Nope, neither. I have some nice suits and stubble mostly. Occasionally a beard.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I'm not sure that's a danger of the business. That's a danger of other people being deranged fuckopaths.

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

+1 for "fuckopaths"

"my ass felt like a koosh ball"

That Bachelorette party seems like the epitome of magician success to me.

So what are you, like, the devil? Demon? Leprechaun?

"Behold! The card is now different" "ITS FUCKIG SATAN!!!!!"

You'd be amazed at what people assume is due to the devil. A woman I used to work with is convinced I worship satan because I'm quiet 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

EH, more like i made the initials of a loved one they were thinking of appear on my skin but still, an extreme reaction.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you had any real talent you would be able to make the haters disappear.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't leave many people left in the world. In this business you learn real quick not to pay attention.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you're at a bar why would you need to keep your act PC anyway? It's a fucking bar I'd be more upset that some moron let kids in >.>

What is ACTUALLY going on in the background pick? like, is that a trick orrrr...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After the quake in Haiti, my unit was sent down to help repair a village. Kids would come to us everyday, usually wanting money or candy (1)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

, but I also did magic for them. Yeah, that ended not so well when the town mayor started throwing rocks at me and calling me a witch. (2)

Magician work stories? I think the Alliance is going to frown on this.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Doubtful, first there is no exposure, second they love getting people interested in magic and third i'm not part of the IBM or anything.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Or a fan of Arrested Development, apparently. Wait...is there REALLY an Alliance?? IBM seems to be...

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Nope not a fan, but there are several organizations for magicians that have some power over the industry. IBM, SAM, a few more.

If someone hired a magician for my bachelorette party I would be pissed as fuck.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was at the bar they were at before they headed to a strip club. They were on an adventure that night. 3 bars, a strip club and a casino

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They started at 5pm and i was supposed to work at 6 for 30-45 minutes just as a sort of fun start to the night and to fool the bride into

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thinking "that was it?" Then they would surprise her with the strippers but apparently they all hit the sauce hard and early.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I found a video of the said magician being set on fire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-zUUpP68GI

Southamerica is a HUGE multicultural subcontinent, in most countries the worst that can happen is that the trick has been seen before

Hey, OP never explicitly said he -wasn't- using real magic!

Oh OH DAMN

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

OP said he was friends with the guy, not the guy himself.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I really dislike how the video is captioned "tv prank gone wrong" when the article explicitly explains it was criminal intent, NOT a stunt.

11 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

You. I like you.

11 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 4

No, I like YOU.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

I like both of you separately, but equally.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Oh get a room you two

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So about that Tracksuit guy, I genuinely recommend phoning the FBI.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If i had done that they probably would have wanted me to wear a wire and go in to deal. I

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Nah, they have their own people for that...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Because that would not be suspicious. "Hey I can't make it, but here is someone you never met, Bob, a totally talented magician."

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

May I ask, how long were you practising your acts before you were confident to perform for others? I'd love to do what you do.

11 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

Honestly? I worked hard for about 3 years before really trying to do it as a show. Before that i mainly showed family for practice.

11 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 2

I've always done little tricks for friends/family but always wanted to get into it a little more. Any advice on how to take it further?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Practice, practice, practice. Other than that i can recommend some beginner resources if you message me.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've always felt like the showmanship would be the hardest part.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It honestly is, but that comes with time too.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

That's awesome. Will keep practicing to the mirror for now :)

11 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Don't give up! Take breaks if you need to, you can burn out easily but always come back! It's a great art form

11 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I'll try! Just the most scared of never getting any good. My progress seems slow.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

as another magician, I started doing a few free shows for my college for fun (opening for hired acts, etc)

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

How did you overcome the fear of fucking it all up?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have fucked it up, but since you're joking around you turn it into a joke and have fun with it. but worst case scenario, I admit(1)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

fucking up and ask to try again, and everyone is usually laid back enough to be cool with it (2)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks for helping my worries :) None of my friends know about it so might have to take that first step.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yea, do it for your friends before going on a stage, its a great stepping stone

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have seen the bachelorette party one happen a lot. People think any entertainment at those things are automatically strippers. I get why.

11 years ago | Likes 333 Dislikes 1

That whole story made me a little sad, because I would love a magician at my bachelorette party, but you would not be treated like that.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I've seen a lot of those pornos too.

did you take any of their offers?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No i didn't. Not really my cup of tea.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey OP, if you don't mind me asking, how exacly did you get into the magic buisness and can you recomend any place to start learning?

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Hey, as far as getting into it, you basically start it as a hobby and it eventually evolves into more. As for where to start i'd highly

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

recommend Royal Road to Card Magic, Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, Expert Card Magic, & then after that it really depends on what you want to do

I for one would like to see MOAR OF DIS:)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't forget Mark Wilson's complete course in magic, expert card technique volume 1, and Magic: the complete course. By Joshua Jay.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mark Wilson's is great as is ECT, but i honestly didn't care for Joshua Jays. I'd recommend Tarbell over all of them though.

This is really cool! I always thought magicians would have more stories up their sleeves than the rest.

11 years ago | Likes 265 Dislikes 2

Why would you think that when magicians are always quick to point out they have nothing up their sleeves at all?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah there are tons of stories but i figured i'd test the waters before putting them out there. Glad you enjoyed them!

11 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 2

I'm just glad Wayne has recovered from that horrific incident.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Seriously, he looks great now. You wouldn't even know it. It's just horrible that of all the people that could happen to it was him.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Question: I've tried getting into magic, but I can't get the double flip (forgot what it was called, when you pick up 2 cards) any tips?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Try a pushover double lift. There are some good tutorials on YouTube.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I really loved these! Please make more. I'm starting into magic myself, and these made my day.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

can I just randomly point out holy fuck are you actually friends with wayne houchin?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Haha yeah, we met a few years ago and meet up every so often. Nicest guy in the world. Genuine and generous guy and great magician.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

that's so awesome!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

im a magician too. I performed at ny college once in front of about 80 people. did a card trick to a black volunteer. he flipped out (1)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

called me a demon, and ran out the door with my gaff card, he never gave it back and i havent seen him since (2)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Haha, without a doubt different ethnicities respond differently and black groups tend to react bigger and more wildly. It's awesome.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

ikr i love it

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think you missed the pun.

11 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 4

I got it, i laughed, i still took it as a compliment. Don't take this away from me, i need a win in life.

11 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 0

Let's go for a straightforward compliment: Your stories are cool, and we want more. Also, magicians are so cool.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Where/how did you learn your tricks? Was it just from the internet or was it... a MAGIC SCHOOL??

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

i to am curious @thedevil plz tell us at least a stepping stone

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Haha no, no magic school. Books, dvd's, other magicians, self-taught etc. A lot of sources.
