Artist's concept of the SLS on the launch platform
The SLS hit a major milestone, the completion of "Critical Design Review" which means that its design has been reviewed and deemed acceptable for implementation. It still has a long way to go before it's taking us to Mars, but if we're going to start on those missions, we'll need something to get us there.
SLS Block 1 Expanded View
The SLS is the first human-rated NASA rocket to pass Critical Design Review since the Saturn V (which powered the Apollo program, taking us to the moon.)
It's the largest NASA rocket ever, and currently our best shot at getting humans (or even more rovers) back to the Moon, to Mars, or elsewhere in the solar system.

GAWD DAMN that is one sexy lady. I would do EVERYTHING to her. She can fly me to the moon any day.

I will build this in Kerbal Space Program and it will be neat-o.

Ride this thing to front page op! +1

Would it kill them to design things with a little pizzazz? I know they're engineers, but they have to have SOME creativity, no?
Skorpychan
And that extra fuel? It needs fuel to push it up. And the tankage to carry it, and fuel to push that up. And fuel to push THAT fuel up, etc.
Nuttsy
It's a fuckin' space rocket, not a roller-coaster! Be happy they didn't riddle the core stage wall full of lightening holes...somehow.

still, looks like poop.

I read this as "design things with a little pizza"
MrRight
I would personally fund NASA if they made ships that looked like pizza !
Skorpychan
There's no room for pizzazz and styling when you're blasting stuff into space. Every gram has to have fuel to push it up.
MrRight
Well, not with THAT attitude !
Skorpychan
You don't understand how rocket science works, do you...
MrRight
I don't...But I did stay at a Holiday Inn express last night.
