When censorship backfires in epic fashion

Mar 23, 2018 8:16 PM

A short while ago a German Youtuber and professional historian uploaded a video talking about the lies used by holocaust deniers. Given the alt-right loves rational discourse so much they decided to mass flag his video and get it initially deleted, then restricted

Then blocked in some countries; however it's hard to keep the truth buried for long

What few good Youtubers remain went quickly to work mirroring the video, and it spread like wildfire. The original is still available, however as the mass flagging has continued it's still restricted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8beSkkKJ_0&bpctr=1521837553

That being said, it has since caused this Youtuber's popularity to skyrocket, over the course of a week his subscriber count has increased fivefold. Seems when Nazis aren't shooting themselves in the head they're shooting themselves in the foot.

It’s called the Streisand effect, not a new phenomenon and both sides have tried to silence each other like this, with similar results.
