But what if I didn't want to go back? Can I be forced to? As far as I know, there isn't a single place on the planet an American can claim asylum. I suspect that will change and pretty soon. But Canada needs to recognize that they are on the verge of a mass humanitarian crisis on their border.
greenytali
Oh no, there will be no crisis at the border months ago ice begun stopping people headed to the Canadian border.
They are gonna capture everyone who isn't white and put them in work camps. They don't want people fleeing across the border and will do what they can to stop it.
ReelPoop
Canadian here, the view from here is great!
Madone7
Nice view, but surrounded by tacky casinos.

I'm pretty sure more than a few Americans came across and never left during the Vietnam draft years
thebigbaka
Pretty sure they will manufacture another a war to bring it back

See? You cant claim to be above whats going on in the USA with that kind of response. Thats the EXACT response the current US administration has for brown people.
MeatTornado
I don’t claim to be above anything, stay go idgaf just shit or get off the pot.
atrielienz
Why would it change? Why would you expect that countries that don't like the US would suddenly want US citizens to come live there? What have you got to offer. Could you be forced to? Yes. Deportation exists in just about every country. What even is this?
idrinkcheapbeer
It will change because the reasons for asylum arent structurally rigid. Its an organic thing that evolves. and Im pretty sure, its going to get worse down here before it gets better. everyone has that "i have had enough" point. Some get there sooner.
atrielienz
I think you misunderstood the question I'm actually asking (maybe I wasn't clear). What is currently happening in the US that should be a deciding factor for accepting US "refugees/asylum seekers"? Because they aren't bursting to take us right now with ICE stealing people off the streets and the giant rotten cheato actively saying he will jail people who disagree with him.
idrinkcheapbeer
How did I misunderstand the question "why would it change"? I answered that question, didn't I?
Nichols3
Don't be an illegal immigrant, you cheapen the efforts of all the people who worked hard to do so legally. Also, personally, I don't want any Americans here, seems like you're all insufferable.
idrinkcheapbeer
Sounds very trumpian.
Nichols3
I don't care, you aren't entitled to come to my country just because you ruined yours. The last thing we need is more people trying to make us more like you, especially when they openly admit to wanting to flaunt our fucking laws. My girlfriend has worked her ass off to get here legally from the Philippines, you can go through the process too, you won't even need to learn a new language.
idrinkcheapbeer
I ruined my country? Thats how you feel?
Nichols3
Americans have ruined America, certainly. I don't know you personally, but a 50/50 shot is terrible odds.
idrinkcheapbeer
"you aren't entitled to come to my country just because you ruined yours." There was nothing unambiguous about that statement. the 50/50 crack confirms it. to you ALL americans are garbage.
Slugsie
I reckon you could probably head over to North Korea and claim asylum.
idrinkcheapbeer
so you propose I go to an even more authoritarian regime? Is that a joke? Or is it you saying "stay the fuck away, you are from the USA"?
Slugsie
No, I'm saying that your claim that "there isn't a single place on the planet an American can claim asylum" might not be 100% true.
idrinkcheapbeer
Show me the north korean policy that states that. you are implying that "they'd be happy to take you as a political maneuver" and that's not really what I'm saying.
Slugsie
I quoted you verbatim. I stand by my reckoning that NK would accept you. Sure they may have ulterior motives, and they may only do it for political reasons, but that doesn't change that they would likely accept you. I grant that you likely wouldn't want to go there, but that wasn't a stated premise in the OP.
eppykaze
Canada has a history of accepting asylum seekers from the US, it does come down to the reason.
idrinkcheapbeer
Is the current state of affairs enough of a reason?
eppykaze
Potentially, but I don't work for border control or immigration to say out right

You can always inquire through an embassy or consulate office for more clear info
idrinkcheapbeer
Is that what people did when they were fleeing the vietnam war draft? they contacted the consulate and embassy before they made that move?
eppykaze
Some did, some just came and requested to stay
idrinkcheapbeer
and its that kind of reply Im counting on.

idrinkcheapbeer
I probably know that page better than you do. How long until the USA gets the "Special Measures" treatment?
sneakinglurkingpeepingguy
With Trump's threatening Canada and the tarrif shit. There's not a lot of sympathy for Americans here at the moment.
idrinkcheapbeer
not even people who have been fighting against this for decades and sees the handwriting on the wall? Is canada rejecting Americans by association? That doesn't seem fair. Im 51 years old. I've never voted for a republican in my life. The president said that he hates me yesterday. If I don't get out soon, I never will.
sneakinglurkingpeepingguy
Didn't say we're rejecting people by association. You're welcome to apply and start the immigration process but I don't feel Americans qualify for "Special Measures"
idrinkcheapbeer
People in the USA are literally being ripped of the streets by masked people who refuse to identify themselves. But ok.
