"I thought you were gay" doesn't seem worse at all. Maybe that's all that was standing in her way and she wants you. IDK what it even really says about *you*, that you're not bothering random women enough or something? Not giving off enough "masculine energy"? That seems toxic. That you have sex with men? I mean I guess you're actually bi, then. There's really no coming back from "ew gross", although that's also kind of a rude way to say no, assuming it was a well-behaved question.

“I thought you were gay” is worse in that it’s farther from “yes” than “no” is. “No” is just rejection, whereas “thought you were gay” implies you’re not even in consideration as a potential romantic partner

Like I said, IMO it's very much not "farther from yes than no". Unavailability in their eyes does not eliminate the possibility for desire.
