I could watch chickens getting launched (in Minecraft) all day.

I built similar contraptions in Rollercoaster Tycoon ...

I was fully expecting a "YEEEET" sound effect at the end, and I am mildly disappointed at the absence of one.

That's no moon...

i wanna see one of these, but instead of yeeting into the sun, launch them into a mad long rollercoaster they lap in seconds

Is it just me or does the sound effect seem eerily similar to the warp off sound from the Escape Velocity games?

Why did the chicken cross the Kuiper Belt?

I just realized that there's now at least two Kim's Convenience alumni who've showed up in new trek. Her (Marlow from Handy) and the latest Strange New Worlds had Raj Mehta on the bridge crew. (This doesn't matter, I just thought it was cool.)

It matters and I appreciates that about you.

As a physicist, I guffaw every time I see it.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, like why they don't make a massive railgun with this technology. Could use some Cern wroomie circles for this...

Centripetal force: F=m*v*v/r. Let's say a 5m wide device (clumsy, but not impossible on land) and just normal howitzer specs for the projectile (42kg, 770m/s). That's about 10 000 000 N. Which the projectile will take sideways, and as reaction force pushing on the side of the accelerator which it, the mounting and vehicle must withstand. And the reaction force will spin around as the projectile goes round, at about 49Hz here, so good luck managing the vibrations.

I think there’s a concept of a similar space cannon. It’s called Verne gun, i believe. Obviously only works for stuff that has a tolerance to severe g forces.

SpinLaunch built a big prototype for this idea and quit on it

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They still want to build the launcher but they currently have too many hurdles to go ahead. To stay alive they are building satellites

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

ah, I read about the pivot to satellites but I assumed they'd canned the idea

it's not entirely crazy for small satellites, thumbing your nose at the rocket equation

It is absolutely a stretch!

Contact (1997)

That is interesting, isn't it?

7 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

What is, there was only static?

7 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

But 18 hours of it.

Most stupid screenplay writing cop-out in movie history.

It blew up!
But wait; there’s another!

Was the chicken OK

7 months ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

He’s in unloaded chunks now. No one can hurt him

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it helps, he doesn't take fall damage...

Is the Sun ok?

"This Kills the Chicken"

I’ve had tastier, and it was a little underdone in places, but the re entry didn’t totally burn it up

We’ll find out when he comes down

*if

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

yes, no matter how far chickens fall they just float harmlessly to the ground

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Chicken went so fast it went back in time and became its own species progenitor

Every time that I try to forget that "Threshold" exists and is a real episode, someone just has to fucking remind me that it's lurking out there

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Shouldn't Discovery's mushroom teleporter be faster, and therefore make lizard people too?

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We're mostly going to pretend that that also never happened.
