so you kinda can't. There are clip on combs that you can use to get longer lengths (up to 1in), but the texture of cat hair (DENSE!) doesn't feed into the comb very well and the cut looks terrible. Most groomers will only shave cats down super short for safety reasons and because that's the only way to get a smooth cut. Thinning shears can be used to leave a more natural look but it's not practical to take significant length off the entire body with shears, takes too long and cats don't stand up

I don't know that it was necessary, but I think the other question is, is there any negative impact on the cat, and it looks like they did a great job of managing the coat and undercoat, and the cat looks generally in good spirits, so I'm not super concerned about whether it was necessary or not.
I was shopping with my wife and wanted to ask her if she needed a drink, but forgot the word drink and all I could think of was that meme so I asked her if she wanted some wets. It is now part of our regular dialogue.
