The pink crystal being placed in as actually Cobalt Chloride Hexahydrate. The other reactant is likely anhydrating some of this into Cobalt Chloride, which is blue.

Isn't cobalt like super toxic or radioactive or something? I remember reading a story about a shipping container port being shut down bc of this stuff

there are radioactive isotopes (such as Cobalt 60 and has a lot of medical radiologic uses), and can be dangerous if ingestive in large qualities. And it's a vital nutrient and part of Vitamin B12.
