They don't "retract" they stretch and contract just like most other skin and muscle. Lifting heavy things isn't "healthy" if you walk into a gym and try doing a 500kg deadlift. Same goes for butts. Work up to it over time, listen to your body, interestingly enough if there's pain you probably aren't going to make gains, accept that there will be limitations in rate of change and absolute size, enjoy the process.
