The first time I saw this movie it blew my mind. Ironically, around the same time, there was this guy on tv that said they weren't interested in adapting anime (from japan) because cartoons were only for children and the only reason studios did cartoons was to sell toys.

I watch it every year. Been watching annually for three decades and am not tired of it yet.

Just watched it again a week ago on Netflix

I love the movie and the Stand Alone Complex series despite their different tones so much. Still the best anime ever, in my personal opinion.

Agreed! From the original Anime to todays GitS SAC Series

Is that Brock Samson?

No, it's the Tick; I mean Joe the policeman.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Batou, also from Ghost in the Shell. This is specifically from the Stand Alone Complex tv series

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

'Making of Cyborg' still on my playlist. There are three versions on the soundtrack, I think this is the first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTPNaUsjksM

One of my favorite pieces of sci-fi. The original as well as Stand Alone Complex add so much to the genre and ask some rather large questions while being entertaining and food for the imagination.

Me, watching The Matrix for the first time: Hey, isn't this from Ghost in the Shell...?

2 years ago | Likes 121 Dislikes 1

SOOO many scenes ripped off shot for shot. The chase where they blow up watermelons, for instance.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hell, even the first few seconds of the film make it abundantly clear where their inspiration same from

2 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

It was staple of cyberpunk :P

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The funny part is that a lot of folks unfamiliar with Ghost in the Shell trashed the movie version for "ripping off the Matrix." Though yeah the movie version wasn't great.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I love original GITS and I had low expectations for the movie, but I enjoyed it enough to wish there would be a second one. Unfortunately many GITS fans trash talked the movie so much and there was also all that hoo-ha about white washing, both contributing to the movie's underperformance at the box office. Ironically the white washing affected the Asian market a lot less than it did the US.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah I thought the movie version was okay... obviously not as good as the source material. I agree it was unfairly maligned.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Her nips were showing? WTF? Is this the non-Americanized version?

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

subtle... but probably correct.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Her nips are poking through the very thin camouflage, yes.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The remade the scene later.

Stand Alone Complex still is my favorite Anime Series ever made. Perfection from Start to Finish. That said i didn't dislike the newer 3D Netflix GitS Shows. At it's Core it's still GitS.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I haven't seen or read the series but i loved the animated stand alone complex movie from 1995? I think.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The original Movie from the 90ies is Like it's own universe, not directly connected to Stand Alone Complex which followed later (and which also had it's own movies).

So basically you have a few GitS Movies like the original one (later came a second one called GitS Innocence), and also a Show with several Seasons (Stand Alone Complex or SAC) which also had it's own Movies and several Seasons.

Also to make it even more Confusing there are several other GitS Shows.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Freaky coincidence; season 2, episode 14 of SAC is currently playing on my PC as i rewatch the whole series for like the 10th time. Hands down my favorite anime series as well, it's just so damn perfect. It's also nice to see someone else who likes SAC_2045. The CG might be kinda goofy in parts but it's still a direct sequel to OG SAC and definitely had the right feel & tone. Love the bank robbery episode in particular.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I remember that i watched the second Season back when it was live and that every Episode aired with like a month Pause inbetween which was crazy to me since i haven't seen this format before or after and it made it really hard to follow the Plot, especially for a complex Show like SAC.

Need to rewatch the Show again too - also love Yoko Kanno for that Soundtrack (and the other Artists which also did some pieces again for SAC_2045)

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh man, that would've been rooouuugh. Season 2 has these super long, super dense exposition dumps that would've made it really tough to follow the plot with a month between episodes. Yokko Kano is truly one of the greats, iconic doesn't begin to cover it and the OP for season 1, Lithium is sooo good! I never get to nerd out about anime with anyone, this has been a real treat.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's really cool to me if you watch the original japanese Du (like i did with Subtitles) that it's literally the same Voice Actors since the first GitS Movie up to SAC_2045. Crazy.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've heard that before! Apparently voice actors in Japan are superstars and with the Major being such an icon, I can only imagine the uproar if they dared change out Atsuka Tanaka, it'd be like recasting Indiana Jones. While I'd never watch the '96 movie dubbed (the script is AWFUL), at some point I started watching SAC in English & now I can't hear anyone but Richard Epcar as Batou. I'd listen to that guy read a phone book. Crispin Freeman as Togusa is also pretty damn good.

The original in the Japanese with English subtitles does it for me. The subs have different and better dialog than the English dubbed voices.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I still re-watch that movie from time to time. The musical interlude of her on a ferry boat through the flooded city? AMAZING.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

The entire score is one of the best. Hell the whole movie is incredible. Easy top 10 anime movies, probably top 5, and I'd listen to arguments about it being #1.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This movie/show (especially Second GiG) are why cyberpunk is my favorite scifi genre

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2nd Gig's version is better

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 4

Nope, they stand as equals, each with their own qualities.

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Agreed!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You just like the nudity, admit it.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

There was actually a background behind it. The feature was mostly a vehicle feature (think of special plating and image generator). You can't make clothes like that, perhaps very bulky power armor (aka landmate). Persnal use is possible only by a cyborg and they have to take off clothes. The sight essentially suggests _who_ might be behind the attack.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Both are better than the live action film

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Prob gonna catch some hate for this, but I did enjoy the Scarlet Jo movie. To be fair though, I've never watched the anime.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

i enjoyed the hollywood white washing

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

the live action movie is...weird. It's fine on its own, but would be better if it made up its mind on being original, SAC, or 1995.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

also, *go fucking watch the original 95 movie*

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

the story is completly different. the originals story is gold.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

GITS is an exploration of Humanity in the face of ever-increasingly complex technology. Ship of Theseus situation, with a hot protagonist.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its good for a set of live action ghost in the shell scenes which are enjoyable on their own, but i cant enjoy the writing, dialog, or the characters really. Even the character designs precision is stunning, but yeah as a movie, i'm not a fan.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I watch so much Stand Alone Complex.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

SAC is a damn gem. I found the story complex when I was young but that’s because it isn’t for kids. What the story accomplishes alongside stunning animations, wonderful voice acting (subbed or dubbed) and a unique, thrilling musical score (by Yoko Kanno) makes SAC one my top recommendations. What is individuality, and is it possible to lose it, or gain it? How truly dangerous is information warfare? Are we in danger of losing sight of what is real in front of us? Fucking brilliant. 5 stars.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

“I stole your eyes.”
Bangbang.
Thud.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yoko Kanno is amazing

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you like to read manga, I recommend Ghost in the Shell: The Human Algorithm, is currently running and is written by the same guy from SAC. It is part of the manga continuity (In between GITS 1.5 and Man Machine Interface) so it has more goofy moments, but the plot totally feels like SAC.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

SAC only rated a C List rank for me, but that's not to say it was bad. In many ways it was groundbreaking, but for me it lacked pace. I still have it and may re-watch in case I missed something.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think I’m very patient with that sort of thing. But I’m curious, what’s an example that rates well for you from a pace perspective?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A current example would be Sousou no Frieren; still airing, but this anime WILL be on my A List. The pace of this show is deceptively laid back until you notice the myriad interconnected references within each episode that demands the viewers absolute attention.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don’t know that one but will see if I can find it. Sounds a bit like Steins:Gate in its pacing though.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Watched this with my 14 year old over Christmas. He actually said “is all this nudity necessary?”, he had a point technically but still. Wtf

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What nudity?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably means the opening sequence + this scene. More interesting to debate whether there is nudity at all, given the cyborg body.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"This scene" however has no nudity. She is wearing thermoptic camouflage which if inactive has a hue close to human skin tone. Rewatch the tank scene where she literally rips herself apart and you see the therms rip before her synthetic skin.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The birth-scene had a little nudity yes, but I've seen more skin and riskier poses in TV commercials on broadcast here in Germany late 70s early 80s.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even considering the birth scene, can we even say there is nudity there? Can a doll be naked? She has nothing to bare given she has no organic body remaining besides her brain.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cartoon nipples are accepted here.

2 years ago | Likes 287 Dislikes 2

That was my big question as a kid too: why her titles gotta be out tho?

Ghost in the shell, boobs on a cell

They are not exposed, she wears a skin-tight suit. Her nipples are exposed only in the making of the machine sequence and the tank fight when her stealth suit rips apart.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I didn’t say they were exposed, did I?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Strangely enough, I never considerd the nudity in the cyborg making scene to be of sexual nature. For me it was the nakedness of the birthing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're purely decorative. Only her brain is organic

2 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

That's why they can show them. They're purely decorative, like a man's.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If you think a man's are purely decorative, then either you've never done sex right or you've never done it right where a man is involved.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey, I may do a lot of things wrong, but at least I don't go around telling someone else how they should be enjoying sex.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, lemme rephrase: a lot of men have sensitive nipples.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I THINK she still has a sense of touch. Pretty sure.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

she has some approximation of a sex drive, given Batou accidentally calls her while she's in the middle of boning at one point.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The major's original meatsuit's gender or their identified gender are never specified. They have only admitted to using a woman's build because it's lends to stealth missions better being smaller. Basic they are exploiting the hit boxes of smaller models lol

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

In the 11th episode of the second season of Stand Alone Complex, "IN: Grass Labyrinth – AFFECTION" it is strongly implied that Motoko Kusanagi was a young girl who was given a prosthetic body due to being a victim of a terrible plane crash. https://youtu.be/c">Yxebuxv0">https://youtu.be/cL4Yxebuxv0 https://youtu.be/RljyXMlxZGw

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The Major uses she/her pronouns consistently across multiple media. And none of that has to do with her having a sense of touch...

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

True. And true. In just saying for the Major a sense of touch would just be the necessity of it. Nothing special about the bewbies. The major would put their brains in a toaster if their mission was make toast.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But, her sense of touch does come up in the manga, more specifically how her military grade body has an order or magnitude more sensors, which turns out are very handy for some 'scientific' endeavors ;)
