So here it is - my second carving project,The Wooden Box Book!

This is going to be a present for a friend of mine and I hope you like it, because that means my friend will also like it!

This time I'm going to go a little bit more into details about the manufacturing process, as I think this might be interesting for the handy ones amongst you.

First things first: I sawed the cover pieces out of thin veneer wood.
(~200mm * 110mm * 5mm)

I then gouged the spine of the book and it's side pieces out of beech wood.
(Spine: ~200mm * 30mm * 35mm)
(Side pieces: 2x ~ 80mm * 25mm * 5mm and 185mm * 25mm * 5mm)

After a bit of reshaping and sanding, I glued it all together

Now comes the tricky part:
For the cover picture, I first designed a template on thin paper (using my tablet to copy motives off the internet - I am not a very good drawer)

I then taped the template on the cover piece and traced the lines with my pyrography pen, thus burning through the paper and into the wood underneath.

Attached two hinges to the cover

Aaaand it's done!

For my first project, the book end made of books, see: http://imgur.com/gallery/k6l9Q

As usual, your comments and opinions are more then welcome!

Thanks for checking this out!

I suck at woodwork. But I'm gonna try this. I love it.

There needs to be a website like Etsy but for imgurians to sell things that made the frontpage.

That would be cool! I doubt it will make it to the front page, though...

Wouldn't a much finer tip on the iron and more time allow for finer detailing of the pyrography thingy?

I tried a couple of different tips and this is really the most suitable one...

Hmm, thanks - I've wanted to do that for a while now seeing as I last did it when I was ~10 and quite dug it.

...as for the extra time, maybe, but wood is tricky to paint on because the surface is never 100% even.
