When you had to put your quarter up because you "got next".
I remember going to the arcade and Marvel vs Capcom was the popular game. There would be a crowd around it and if you wanted to play next you put a quarter up on the screen to hold your place in line. Whoever loses is kicked off and the next person in line plays.
This was an unwritten rule and everyone followed it. Although there were a few exceptions like if it was a really close match the loser would ask for a rematch.
Being the winner meant you got to continue playing the next challenger for free. Trying to hold the winning position the longest would be the challenge. As you do so people would be cheering for one or the other.
I go to arcades now days and it's not the same anymore. There's no excitement, yelling or cheers anymore.

I got next and you put down your quarter. Idk how many people I've taken quarters from in MK but it's a lot.

you'd be hard pressed to find anything in an arcade that you can't get at home on console or pc. (2/2)

Used to work in an arcade. Unless it is a unique arcade, mostly redemption and merchandisers anymore. not about games, it's about prizes
