Our New Kitty: Smolg

One of the strays we care for got injured by a tough cat. We had no idea which cat it was, until my wife went to let said stray (Cobweb) out of the apartment and suddenly there was a tabby in the stairwell hall spitting and hissing at her. She dragged Cobweb back in and closed the door. We'd never seen this cat before, but considering she was really vicious, we knew we found the right cat. Three days later, I went to let Cobweb in and this tabby was at the door. She spit and hissed at me and I hurriedly shoved a bowl of kibble out at her and slammed the door. 10 minutes later, the bowl was totally empty and the cat still wanted in. It was cold, she was hungry, and I thought maybe she was just angry because she was cold and hungry, and against my wife's wishes, I let her in to get warm.

Back in November a couple came looking for a female brown tabby they had lost. But just three days before finding her at our door, my wife had given up hope of finding the cat since it had been 4 months and deleted the number. We tried to find her owners again, but she'd been out for around 7-9 months already. She was skinny, so we decided to help her put on some weight while we searched. She was mean, but she was also a strange yet endearing cat. She was small and vicious so we called her Smolg, which combines Smol and Smaug. "Tiniest of calamities".

She put on weight, but also went into heat. With all the unfixed strays we were feeding, we couldn't risk her getting pregnant and took her to the shelter explaining she was lost. They had no records of anyone trying to find her. Not surprising, none of the shelters we called did. 2 days later we got a call back. She was too aggressive to handle and would not be able to be put on the adoption floor. If we didn't come reclaim her, she was going to be put to sleep. Of course we came and got her and the shelter kindly spayed, vaccinated, mite treated, and microchipped her. We paid the fee, and went home.

She's recovering from getting spayed, but she's the same old Smolg as before. She has a fancy new pink, reflective kong collar for all her nifty little tags the shelter sent us home with.

She has a new home, now, with people who she tolerates and doesn't try to attack (too much), and she didn't have to be put to sleep. Happy ending!
