Commander Keen

Nov 15, 2018 9:55 AM

One of the first titles we played on our first PC. Flippy disk and DOS!

Almost unbelievable that they went on creating Doom.

Does anyone know if keen dreams had an actual ending? I think mine bugged out after the potato castle.

My single uncle had this game on his laptop back in the early 90's and let me play when I visited. Could never figure out why he bought it.

Yeah dude! I'm so surprised that so many strangers know this game! Pure happiness! I didn't expect so my upvotes or comments!

That sound makes me feel like a kid. I hear it and suddenly i can smell the basement we had the PC in and hear the clicky clacky keyboard...

I loved it. One day I played it for 6 hours straight, went to bed right after... the pogostick noise played through my head all night :D

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

YESSSS! Played this all the time as a kid

Favorite thing about my grandparents' house.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With exception of 2 & 3 ('til they were freeware), I played all the PC games. I feel that the games stagnated after Keen 5, (1/2)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

with 6 & Keen Dreams being... OK. Read once that a GameBoy for Keen was made, but poorly received. Real shame what became of Commander Keen.

I thought I was the only one who remembered this game! Was just thinking about this and other Apogee hits the other day. Crystal Caves?

Impostor!! Flippy disk? Pshh....

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We also had a floppy drive, but the flippies were ... easier to handle. Let alone the disk storage boxes!

Been reading Masters of Doom, had no idea what iD did for the PC gaming world, always just thought it was doom, John Carmack is a genius

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Developed by ID published by Apogee software. Apogee had many good games published back then. Welcome to the early ages of gaming.

"Flippy disc" actually sounds way cooler than "floppy disc"

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In Africa we called them flippies. At least our dad did. Floppy disks = big. Flippy = small.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Loved this game. And to think he's an ancestor of Doomguy (and a descendant of Wolfenstein's protagonist).

7 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Oh, yeah, Mr. 314?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're all called "William J. Blazkowicz", although they were known by their nicknames (like "Billy Blaze" on Commander Keen).

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know, I was just making a Mortimer McMire reference.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, OK. I had no idea.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Main villain. Keeps making fun of Billy, because Billy scored 314 on IQ test and Mortimer scored 315.
