Except the AK-47 is not representative of the Soviet Union, its tenure in the Soviet Union wasn't very long, with other versions quickly replacing it.
The AK-47 is considered an icon of fighting against oppressive governments, however, which I believe the commenter you are replying to is more likely to be referencing.

If you want to talk about its tenure after the Soviet Union fell, it's most associated, in my mind, with the Taliban, ISIS, Al'Qaeda, and other ultra-fundamentalist right wing fascist groups in the middle east.
