My first introduction to the ever talented Carolina Eyck was her theremin performance of the Diva Dance from The Fifth Element. She totally nails it.

So what else sounds amazing on the theremin? Why... the theme to Severance of course!

And if you want to hear something truly beautiful? Somewhere Over the Rainbow of course.

Or maybe The Ecstasy of Gold from The Good, The Bad & The Ugly? (Carolina's talents are far more than just the theremin...)

Is there anything more beautiful than the theme from Interstellar?

Or maybe My Favorite Things if you're feeling in a bit of a festive or The Sound of Music sorta mood? I absolutely love the legato between these notes.

If you've never seen or heard of the theremin before, it's a Russian instrument that involves using your hands (acting as a half capacitor) in relation to two metal antennas (acting as the other half capacitor) creating the unusual tones you hear. You never actually *touch* the instrument at all, which is pretty unique. The movement of Carolina's left hand above the looped antenna controls the volume, while the position of her right hand in relation to the other antenna creates the specific tones. It's a very intriguing approach where your body is literally just as much as part of the music as the instrument itself. (In fact, you have to be careful with other movements because that'll affect the sound too. haha)

I've heard a few folks "play" the theremin, as in make it make sounds and a few melodies here and there, but few have mastered it as a true instrument the way Carolina Eyck has. Totally awesome.

If y'all wanna see more, definitely check out Carolina's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@carolinaeyckvideos/

Thersmins are so trippy. It’s like, they shouldn’t even exist. Almost alien like.

Someone needs to make an acoustic theremin!

I saw a punk band once where one of the dudes had a shitty homemade theremin made from salvaged electronics and coat hangers. It was awesome.

What family of instruments does the theremin fall under? Its not brass. Its not woodwind. It doesn't have any strings. Is it a percussion instrument?

I’ve been following Grégoire Blanc on YouTube to get my theramim fix.

She's got heaps of albums out, some with orchestras.

To quote Bob and Ray, yeah I know what a theremin is.

A true virtuoso.

Star Trek was my first. She is phenomenal in her skill. It's a very challenging instrument to master (or at least play reliably on)

This is like one of those episodes of Futurama where Fry shows what a Holophonor can really do. (I think he was great at it both when he had worms and also when he had the robot devil's hands?)

Only three people can play it, and they play it badly!

Thank you for this

Two things: phenomenal left hand, that's where the expression is and she absolutely kills it; and holy crap, one of the models has lights that follow the pitch? That's SUPER useful when learning!!

Eyck? Wonder if her family has any relationship to Jan Van Eyck the famous Flemish painter. If so, that means we're technically related

I don't understand why the theramin hasn't become more popular. It's an amazing thing.

Personal opinion but I'm not a fan. It's eerie, beautiful and complicated, but kind of like the Jews (juice) harp, it's limited in its tones , and I don't personally care for the sound. She is absolutely talented, and songs are beautiful, but found myself fast forwarding after each piece started.

also *very* hard to play well, at least in a conventionally melodic way.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I don't know what's more impressive... That she's that good or that she has a theremin that actually sounds good, and not like Star Trek TOS...

Theremin’s are easy to play badly but so so so hard to play this well

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

One of the differences is that everyone can see how precisely she is holding her hand, while when the person is holding the violin it's not quite so obvious

Carolina Eyck and theremins are both great… but My Favorite Things is not a Christmas song and I don’t know why, but it infuriates me when people insist on playing it during the holidays. The song offhandedly mentions Christmas presents once, and only in the spoken patter between the verses.

hahaha For me, I always associate it with The Sound of Music more than anything else. So I tend to picture thunderstorms and making clothes outta curtains instead of the holidays. 😂

It's a song about lists of favorite things. That's practically a sung letter to Santa.

No kid is asking Santa for wet flowers, kitchen equipment, winter apparel, or kitten whiskers.

#1 nothing to do with her, but that song... a lot of people don't realize this, but the girl who played the blue alien singer in that scene was the director's lover at the time. She was also a minor when she played that role. Put 2 and 2 together.

He knocked her up when she was barely 16. .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma%C3%AFwenn#Personal_life

2 weeks ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

She was 4?!

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

According toto Wikipedia, she was 20 when she played the role, but he did get her pregnant at 16

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She wasn't a minor during filming (she was born April 1976, therefore turned 18 in 1994; the movie began filiming in 1996). She was however a minor when they got married (she was 15 and he was 33).

2 weeks ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

hmm, then my timeline is off, but the point stands, the director is a pedo

2 weeks ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

That's a funny way to say you were wrong.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

you're right, the director isn't a pedo despite marrying a 15 year old girl and impregnating her at 16

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No doubt on that

2 weeks ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

This is the most civil discussion with a correction I have ever seen. And informative too. Koodos and good day to the both of you.

2 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I try to be civil but most people don't return the favor :)

Alright, so the director was married to the *opera singer* who performed the audio for this recording. Who was *not* a minor during the filming of said film, but *was* a minor when they met lmao.. mila jovavich (the lead) on the other hand *was* a minor during filming of said movie, which then said director proceeded to leave his *non-minor* wife to pursue relations with the minor. So yes, still creeeeeeepmcgeeeep! But facts matter

2 weeks ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

I believe Mila was in her early 20s when filming The 5th Element.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Facts do matter. Fact 1: he's still a creep... but... Mila was not a minor during 5th element.

Wikipedia says Milla was born in 1975, making her 21-22 when 5th element was filmed.

Maiwenn was 15 when they married though. He's also been accused of rape and other inappropriate behavior on set by other actresses. The rape accusations did not stick in court.

2 weeks ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

The earliest I can find is an article saying that Luc and Mila met when she was 19, and they married in 1997 after wrapping up 5th Element, when she was 21. Luc Besson was 38 when they married, which is still a 17 year age gap. They divorced 2 years later.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ok so I got the timeline wrong, but he married her when she was 15 and he impregnated her when she was 16, but he's TOTALLY not a pedophile. Sure, sure.
Blocking you. Go back to sucking Trump's cock.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 20

Oh look at that. Lots of pedo defenders out in force to night.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 13

No one's defending the pedo. They're just correcting your mistakes and you're taking it personally. Grow up

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

The guy you replied to said the director met the singer as a minor and was trying to cheat on the singer with a different minor. That is definitely not a person trying to defend the director against claims of pedophilia.

2 weeks ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

More than that was said. He was trying to play it off like he's not a creep.
