I feel like being born before 1990 is crucial to the enjoyment of that movie

Is it good? I loved the book and am slightly afraid the movie sucks

You like Spielberg ? You go. You don't like him ? You still can have fun.

If you loved the book, don't watch it.

I enjoyed it and I haven’t read the book. I went with three others who loved the book and they loved the movie too. It is different though.

I read the book unaware that it was a young-adult type thing and was perpetually agonizingly frustrated by the cringy, shallow writing-

Thank you! God, it and Armada are such cliched dogshit. You can find better rubbish in that vein on RoyalRoadLegends, and it's a cesspit.

-the movie was less awful and didn't make me want to throw up in my own mouth once, but it's still quite bad and dumb and lacking depth.

I hated the book. I loved the movie. I wish they kept somethings from the book, but I'm glad they changed the worst parts.

Aech's voice effect was fucking stupid though. Like, really? That's the best you can do?? With a movie budget and sound engineers???

I wanted her birthmark to be redder. Like...make it impossible to hide. That shit just looked like it was just a slight tan.

Yes! The whole point was that it was a significant thing and made her self-conscious, but then it's just like, barely even there... weak.

That has nothing to do with YA, and everything to do with being a poorly written book

In my experience/opinion, that's broadly what YA is now. It used to be just more accessible literature, now it's simplified and superficial-

-very laser-focused on grabbing as much of the target demographic's attention as possible by whatever means necessary, merit is optional.
