I like trains.
I think a fair amount of people just vote based on the party name, rather than the platform on which they're running. Similar to how people buy things for the brand name, rather than for the functions/features/quality.
If politicians just ran based on their platform and policies without giving away what party they belong to, then wouldn't that force people to actually read what the platform is before they vote, and the vote will be based more on knowledge of the policies at hand, rather than "my family votes Republican so I'll vote Republican" or "I'm not a redneck so I'll vote Democrat"?
This will also get rid of this "team" mentality where people feel like they have to support their team to beat the other team, regardless of what it costs. Politics isn't a sporting event, but most people treat it as such.
Last point, fuck gerrymandering. Thanks.

That is the purpose of the 2 party system in its current form. The oligarchs need a false dichotomy in order to divide and concur.

Omg, who turned on the "Captain Obvious" signal on the roof again? Come on, guys! I can't stand these common sense posts.
SgtDefaultGN
If it’s such common sense, why aren’t the American people pushing to change the current system?
Jenkbi
but then the populace wont be so easy to control via their emotions. "Us v. Them" is very profitable to certain parties.

i use 'parties' there just as "a group of people" not political parties

Like the billionaire class that has subverted our democracy and turned us effectively into an oligarchy.

The parties themselves generally have platforms, so people are already kinda doing what you're suggesting. Removing party labels isn't (1)
DamnedAustin
going to make people more informed, it will just mean more people have less of an idea what they're voting for. I support having more (2)

than two parties, and think there's some benefit to coalition governments, but labels themselves aren't the problem. (3/3)
