Only thing I would have changed, would be removal of that center support to make the shelf free floating.

I think they're talking about the bench, not the shelf. The MDF up top is not only essential for the hooks,but the overall look as well imo

I feel ya. Structurally I wouldn't have trusted the bench without the center support. Only had one stud to work with on each wall.

Plus, the center support creates a nice divider for the two bins below.
