As a dude, MRW I read this

This is why you need sex ed classes -_-

NASA wasn't sure if 100 tampons was enough for a week long mission.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean nothing should be free, someone's got to pay somehow that's just how it works.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a dude, I'm ashamed by his knowledge but not surprised at the comment

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

i dont think it's a grasp of biology, but a lack of teaching in health class

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If tampons were free, toilet paper should also be free.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seems like Ryan Williams has enough of a grasp on female anatomy to run for office as a republican.

In the words of Rachel Green “no uterus no opinion”

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ryan.....thanks so much for being an idiot

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am ok with chipping in for peoples bladder problems as well. Or eye problems, dental problems, cancer problems.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Universal healthcare would solve a lot of issues.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I demand free Manpons! You know, those pads you put in your undies to protect against farts that don't quite turn out to be all gas.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nothing is free.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 5

Even if they just removed absurd taxes from them. They’re still considered a “luxury” item in Australia and attract higher taxes and costs

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

More precisely: they aren't included in the list of "essential" items that are exempt from the 10% Goods and Services Tax.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The product is still sold at an increased shelf value because it’s a product that women are dependent on

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The people who believe this make laws.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

As someone with bladder control issues due to disability, fuck this guy to the extreme, depends should be free too, that shit is expensive.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And uncovered by insurance of any kind.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

See I don't know if these tweets are purposefully stupid or... am I going to have to get these people hysterectomies/vasectomies?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Switch to the menstural cup. I haven't bought lady products in over a year and it's more eco friendly.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

They're so much better than tampons or pads though they don't work well for everyone unfortunately. :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People who don’t think tampons should be available for free in public restrooms should remind me the last time they paid for toilet paper

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

in a restaurant, department store, etc.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I mean, I don't know about FREE. But definetively WAY cheaper.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well this is so stupid I don't get it why aren't tampons free but condoms are I'm a guy btw I mean you can choose not to have sex but 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

You can't choose not to have you're period. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

there are still an amount of people who believe girls are in full control of their period and that yes they do choose to have it

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where do you live where you can go to a shop and buy free condoms... and if you say university theres some that all ready do..

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The uk

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Condoms aren't free.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Colleges, hospitals, family planning centers, and health departments pass condoms out for free.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A great deal of the western world has places where you can obtain free condoms and birth control.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'm a single male, and I think they should be free. It's something out of your control, so it should be covered.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

What other things should be free? Clothing? Toilet Paper? Food? Water?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Basic clothing, sure, TP sure, basic food and water absolutely. Not designer clothes and tbone, but something to survive yes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At that point, honestly just a basic guaranteed base income would make more sense. Give everyone enough that they're just above the poverty

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m a female, but in all fairness, if tampons should be free, then water (in private dwellings), basic medical care, & food should be too.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 6

Water and medical care SHOULD be free

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Water and medical care are in some countries. Not food though

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

*are free

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I live in NZ and all that stuff is free here but tampons are still not taxed as an essential hygine item likw toilet paper.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you think it's not a necessity, have women go without for a month while wearing skirts, and only hire male cleanup staff.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 5

OMG, mom, stop being so gross. You're embarrassing me.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Usually they are taxed the same as toilet paper, but I don't see everyone threatening to leave poop everywhere.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

If only men had to buy toilet paper, I guarantee you they would.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

TIL: Men don't buy toilet paper? lol

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

No, "only" meaning "just". Comprehension is fundamental.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Touche, I overlooked that word in your comment. But men are usually still paying tax on toilet paper and I've never seen a man or anyone (1)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This attitude is legitimately a huge problem in women prisons. The refusal to provide tampons is appalling.

8 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 6

I' bleed over EVERYTHING

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sadly, that's the least appalling of the many many many appalling aspects of the American prison system.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What now? You can't deny prison inmates access to basic hygiene supplies. There are international laws against that. Where do you live??

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 4

U.S of A baby. It's been a thing here at least. thankfully it's starting to change

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I would assume USA. https://edition.cnn.com/2017/08/29/health/federal-prisons-free-tampons-pads/index.html check the date on that one.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

The refusal to abide the law is also appalling

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 34

You're a shit person you know.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Anyone caught smoking marijuana is subhuman and needs to be tortured and given shit medical care. I agree with assholes like you. /S

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

Decriminalized in my area ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 11

That does not change the argument. This is just a variation of "not my problem"

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The prices should be much more affordable if not free. Pads and tampons are a necessity not a luxury.

8 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 17

With that logic food, toilet paper, bandaids, diapers and other necessities should be free. Free? No. Cheaper? Yes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I thought pads and tampons were a tool of the patriarchy? #freebleeding

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

Like how everyone skips past the part where I put much more affordable first. Free would be nice is all I am saying. More affordable (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Birth control while we're on the subject too. (2/2)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah yes, free necessities that everyone the world over gets like free TP, food, housing, child care. Gotta love all those free things. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 9

Affordable and reasonably taxed, absolutely. Free, fuck outta here with that insanity. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

Not free but why is there a sales tax? That makes no sense to me.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Depends on where you are from. In my state here in the US we pay sales tax on literally everything I can think of.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah... here we pay it on all but food, except for so called "taxable food" like soda.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

WI is weird. If I buy a dish of ice cream (custard, actually) it's taxed. If I get a pint it's tax free because it's a bulk item. Crazy.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The call for them to be free is minuscule, the call for them not to be classed as a luxury item is more mainstream

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

I know

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think they should be provided free in schools, universities, etc. You don’t bring your own toilet paper to school, why bring tampons?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

interesting idea that. Though they are more expensive and school kids seem to have a habit of doing stupid shit. Also the variety is so vast

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that stocking the right one could be a challenge whereas TP is fairly universal.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There’s more leeway with pads. Getting the wrong size tampon can be painful and possible dangerous, but supplying a standard medium-

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Although, now that he mentions it, I kinda feel like we could throw a tax break at people who have health related bladder problems.

8 years ago | Likes 167 Dislikes 3

Don't throw it too hard though...weak bladders, y'know?

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 19

Not sure why you’re being downvoted, you’d have to be as idiotic as the conservative bogeyman in this story to swallow it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Nobody here said he believed it unconditionally but it's worrying enough that you even have to think about whether or not this is true

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Part of me wants to say this is a B.S. story, part of me believe there's people dumb/uninformed enough to believe this.

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1345 Dislikes 22

luxury tax is 5%, tax on tp is 20%

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Where im from tax on tp is 0 and tax on tampons is 10%

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

How much cost a pack of tampons in US with tax and all?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah pa doesn't tax them

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis. Should never have been considered a luxury item ever. So fucking stupid, same with stuff like condoms.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

IKEA has them for free in their bathrooms.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm pretty sure "luxury item" legally simply means "not exempt from sales tax", which includes 99% of products.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

complainianianianianiants

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

they should be taxed like medical supplies, it makes the most sense.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sales tax is generally a STUPID. Tax "bads" u want less. Most sales are "goods". Progressive income tax = Adam Smith, not just communism.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Wait, they are taxed as luxury good in the us? WTF?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

I think this all stems from providing pads/tampons to female inmates in the US, as they cannot afford to buy them from commissary.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Okay, that's totally fair.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Feminine hygiene products are also the number one requested item by homeless women

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Are they taxed as a luxury good or are they taxed the same as everything else?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They aren't charged any more than items like TP (it is taxed in most states unlike misinfo). Sales tax is a type of luxury tax.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It depends on where you live. In some places sales tax is determined by product category, for example luxury items may be taxed more than

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

medical supplies. The argument is that in some places with that system tampons are taxed at the luxury rate despite being necessities

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've heard many "complainiants" ask for free tampons. Never heard anyone say they're taxed as a luxury good

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 9

Not trying to argue the luxury goods tax, just looking to be informed

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I think OP is reffering to the cost of sanitary products for female inmates in the US.

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 11

Then he's still wrong, since that's not what tampons are for.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Absolutely not. In most countries they are considered a luxury to the public. Including the UK. Don’t spread your made up opinions.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Oh! Thanx for clarification. I thought it was a kind of strawman thing. Turn the luxury tax agrument into 'sjw bulshit' asking for freebies

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 28

The US prision system is so fucked if free acess to mandatory disposable hygiene items needs to be argued over. Do they charge for meds too?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Not that I think they should be charged but it is not impossible to use tp during "that time". Tampons are certainly more comfortable though

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 12

If you read the article about that prison, they restricted the toilet paper.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That’s terrible for your body though. Can cause tears on the labia and skin irritations. Even pads aren’t great but TP is awful.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Its also possible to wipe your ass with newspaper but tp is more comfortable.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

God I'm tired of this myth. For tax, luxury items are anything that isn't exempt from sales tax. Tampons are not taxed higher.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 43

How is it a myth? Only recently where the luxury taxes dropped on them where I live. It s almost like not everyone lives where you do

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 5

Tampons are absolutely taxed higher in most countries. They’re considered a luxury good. Whereas toilet paper isn’t. If I had to choose 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Btwn toilet paper and tampons, I’d pick the tampons. I can hold my pee til I find something. But not obvious red blood I can’t control 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

In Australia they certainly are taxed higher. Maybe not where you are, but here, we pay GST which is waived for other 'essential' items.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

You also pay GST on toilet paper.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 6

Know what else is exempt from sales tax? Birth control pills. Because they're a fucking prescription.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

Should they be exempt? Maybe, but they are absolutely not subject to any "highfalutin' tax"

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 6

There are separate luxury item taxes though. In CT jewelry, fur, and clothes over $5k and cars over $50k have about another 1-1.5% of tax

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's the issue. People conflate the true luxury tax with the "non-essential" sales tax. In CA, non-essential includes many things>

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That people agree are essential, like tampons and soap and clothes.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fun fact, tampons are taxed as low as they can possibly tax them. It's like people just want to be outraged instead of correcting things

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 23

I think they deserve an exemption as much as any other necessity, but this is not a case of the patriarchy trying to steal money from women.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 6

They have an exemption greater than other necessities. That's the point I'm trying to make.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 13

In the US they're taxed as a normal product.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

No it’s a case of a woman’s health and hygiene essentials not being categorized as important as those that apply to men

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

In fact, I can't find a single state that exempts toilet paper but still taxes tampons.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What sales tax exempt products do only men use?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

maybe free at school. If a university can offer free condoms they should offer free feminine supplies. students are broke, doesn't mean 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 8

They should have to be unsanitary. Same f=goes for prison but that's changing now thank god

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 3

But you'd just be paying for it in tuition instead, the difference being tuition is up front and has overhead =/

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's free at my school in the Women's Centre and Health and Councelling Centre. :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The university I go to has a free tampon/pad machine in every female washroom. They are of lower quality obviously but they work just fine.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Same here. Schools/uni’s with no free pads/tampons is crazy to me. Where you all living?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing they're not meant to be your main supply, but rather the emergency go to.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's insane that they even taxed them as a luxury good in the first place. I'm not even a woman but I'm pretty sure women don't

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

A lot of the "luxury tax" is hype. In CA, "essentials" are tax free, but it's a very narrow definition. Soap, clothes, and tampons are >

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

all charged equal sales tax by the tax code. Very specific things like meds or fresh groceries are tax free.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Really? I can't think of anything better than bleeding for several days, having cramps, being dizzy, and hating myself.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Think it's luxurious to have a period.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

How much cost a pack of tampons in US with tax and all?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

About $6 dollars. 1.5 boxes a month. $108 per year. Sales tax on $108 in MN would be about $8.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Multiply by 35 years, (not adjusted for inflation) is $3780. Around $265 in sales tax.

Until recently, Canada taxed them as a luxury. Now they arent

The US for one

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 7

Wait - did we get annexed by Canada? Because this part of the US, that's not the case.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is literally nowhere in the US that taxes tampons but does not tax toilet paper or diapers.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not everywhere. In fact, not the majority of places. Most places they get the same flat tax as everything besides fresh food gets.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

Only 5 states with sales tax don’t overtax tampons. Essentials in every state are not taxed.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

So now toilet paper and diapers aren't essentials? Or over the counter medicine? Because they certainly tax those in my state.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What counts as essential? Every receipt I can think of has shown the same sales tax for all items.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

There are only 5 states in the US that do not tax tampons, and only 5 more with no sales tax. Out of 50. Wow

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 5

Yeah, but in those 45 states they also tax toilet paper and diapers. That's the point.

2/ But regardless. looks like we agree on what the right answer should be.. which would probably matter if you were a poor woman.

No, it looks like TP and diapers fall into tax-exempt "groceries" in most states, including even lip balm and dandruff free shampoo in NYC.

Because they’re considered a “luxury”.

Toilet paper and diapers are luxuries now?

In some states, yes.

Maybe as opposed to pads? A weird thing to call a luxury.

Pads are also taxed as luxury items

In Australia it does, essential items such as fresh food (butter/milk), TP and condoms are GST exempt. But tampons aren't because "luxury".

Are maxi pads luxury taxed also? Do they want people to use the old cotfon sanitary napkins? Thats nuts

Never said they were. However, tampons & pads are taxed as luxury because they’re not seen as a necessity for the population. Which is dumb.

You literally replied to a question about taxing toilet paper and diapers differently from tampons.

Toilet paper and toothpaste are subject to the exact same tax, and more people use those.
