-5.25 prescription

All but a handful of lens are made by the thousands in a factory, and only cut to size for the frames. Which is good since resin material isn't strong enough to be at all scratch resistant.

Makes me think about how just a few hundred years ago if you had vision problems you just kind of had to live with it.

"Whole" process.

Neat.

More like eyerasins

Don't unmute.

*First few seconds* My Brain: "I should call her."

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool song

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure it takes longer than 47 seconds to make a lens.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We should be calling them 'Eyeplastics' now... 🤡

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's the purple liquid at the start?

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Clear plastic resin

1 year ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Many questions about that first part, like is that a joke or really how they make the lens bases? Do they put it in a vacuum to get the bubbles out?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

finally, a use for epoxy resin that i don't hate!

1 year ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

All I can think about when I see those vids of people grinding away at resin projects is how much fucking microplastics they are creating. Jesus Christ

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I'd rather see a video explaining how they used to make prescription glasses back in the early 1900's or earlier before there was all this technology helping them make sure they made the right prescription.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fiiineee... I *guess* they are allowed to be expensive.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No they arent itsa monopoly.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That's a freaking saucer. Glasses for the mole people

Still don't understand

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Misread that completely. Whole time thinking it was "glass eye," and was waiting to be thoroughly impressed.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone is extremely nearsighted.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would be mine, except I get high-index lenses which are super thin but extremely expensive. Worth every cent to me since I absolutely cannot see if I am not wearing them

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have to pay like 50€ for every 0.1 mm that gets removed.

Now draw the rest of the owl

Fucking owl

As long as it's mutual

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like the part where the machine did the thing

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Wheres the step where they deal with the thousands of air bubbles.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Those are expensive lenses.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hold up. so glasses are not made from glass but some kind of resin?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was an optician for a while (very regrettably). Its a safety thing and also plastics can be made with different densities and refractive indices so that you can get a more powerful lens that isn't as thick as a brick.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most glasses today are plastic. While less scratch resistant they are lighter and don't shatter when dropped.

Oh thank fuck for that awesome musical score, it really sold the story.

I found that having the caption permanently reminding me of what was happening was invaluable, and frankly, critical for maintaining my concentration throughout.

You can mute the audio, you know. I did. Whining in the comment section doesn't help.

Now show why the frames cost hundreds of dollars.

Wait, no. That's luxotica's fault, and their monopoly(80%+, it's absolutely a monopoly)

1 year ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

Luxottica owns the store and the eye care insurance so when I want to get my free eyeglasses every year the salesperson tells me to pick from the shittiest frames in the store and tries to upsell me. Also is it just me or is it fucked that there are people at the front of the store trying to shake me down and there is an optician in the back of the store disconnected from the rest of the healthcare system.

I bought my first real glasses. I saw the Ray Ban frames I wear as sunglasses so I knew it would be comfortable to wear for long periods. I didn’t ask the cost because I had insurance. Ooof

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can order glasses online and pay a small fraction. Paying hundreds for frames is a choice.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

Try having a complicated lens. My frames cost fuck all, my lens options needed to make them fit without looking like jam jars cost me over an extra £100.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Bro.

"the monopoly isn't 100% so it's your fault that the monopoly exists"

is a dog-shit take. And that's the take you've presented.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

More that the monopoly doesn't exist and if you do a little research instead of listening to a salesman, you can save lots of money.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

80% and crushing competitors is a monopoly.

The monopoly exists.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now apply the shitty film over it that flakes off in a few years and charge me through the roof for it.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

That happens? I've been wearing specs from several sources for over fifty years and never had that happen, not even with the cheap ones from Zenni.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I literally have zenni’s on right now and the peeling has been happening for 2.5 years now. I need new glasses mind you but it’s just ridiculous that the expensive coating breaks down with normal general use.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh. Which coatings do you get? Do you get photochromic lenses? I don't think the oleophobic coating is worth getting.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never get the anti-glare. Only the anti shatter coating I’m pretty sure.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. Mine aren't cheap either but after a year or two they start to flake.
Used to be worse, they would yellow too but that hasn't happened in well over a decade.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow! I wonder why yours do, but mine don't?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

no idea. I'm thinking it's due to sweat. It happens where it's close to my brow.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's possible that's it, but it shouldn't be.
I have hyperhidrosis. I sweat profusely. If I wear specs with electroplated frames, the coating will corrode and flake off. (I turn silver jewellery black in a couple of days.)
These days, I only wear titanium or stainless steel. Still no issues with the lenses.

You'll probably find that no matter what brand your specs are labelled as, or what store you're buying them from, you're still buying the same overpriced crap from the same manufacturer.
