Sometimes being a night shift nurse sucks.
insanemaestro
I tell my bosses "Schedule me for New Year's Day if you want, I just can't guarantee the condition in which I show up."
DeviantPhuq
Quit
Jeitme
In nurse culture this is considered a dick move...
fusedmedic77
Fellow nightshift nurse here...youre boss is a dick.
Need2Vent
I, too, work night shift in Emergency Medicine. Love it when you work all night to be told you had the holiday "off"... oh yeah, riiiight.
Comradesjeltonarmy
As a pharmacy tech in a hospital I worked every holiday labor day through Christmas. Then they had the gall to take my PTO for New year's

same.casino life.Grave shift xmas eve, xmas day, ny eve, ny day. working the xmas party so missing that, oh but they gave me boxing day. yay
slapdaddysupreme
That stinks, sorry @OP
strongbowdanzig
As someone who's child spent his first Christmas in hospital, thank you
FlyingGiantElk
Night shift nurse? Just post racist shit on Twitter and you can get time off, easy.
Unpaid... and permanent.

Er Doc. Working Christmas Day and New Year’s Day...I’m a senior attending at my hospital too. Feel ur pain.
EliteForce
That s the sad thing about working in certain fields. No holiday break.
ssaberhagen
Im sorry, my boyfriend is an ER night shift nurse, he's working xmas eve as well, he worked thanksgiving too. It's a tough gig but thank you
Izzymandias
"It is a position of honour. There are others, But I trust you to be there when it matters most, because I know what you are capable of."
And abusing your best staff like this is the best way to lose them... time and time and time again.
"Sorry Mrs. Smith, no one wanted to work Christmas/New years eve. So your husband died."
TheChim
You have a job that posts schedules out a month in advance? LUCKY.
RoundThreeFIGHT
You're making mucho money those days though
Only on 2 of them. Since I'm nights, 12/24 and 12/31 are my only technical holidays.
casuallystalking
That's fucked up.
puhuppypuhower
Spend that time-and-a-half on something that will fill the emptiness in your soul because nothing else will make you feel any better.
climbontotheshore
I might have to spend Christmas on my own because of work, and lack of public transport around the holidays. I feel this pain. God speed ✌
kutakino
Same here, scheduled Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/day, New year's Eve/day. My boss's reasoning was I didn't ASK for any of them off.
channyfanny
I'm on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. I put my hand up for them though.. I'm a sucker for public holiday rates :)
Pr0xycast
What's holiday pay?
No kidding. My holiday "incentive" is a joke.
I actually don't know what holiday pay is
Cowfister
Huh. I volunteered for those days. Overtime plus twelve hours holiday comp. I plan on having a good birthday.
GodCommentMaker
Thank you for your service @op, nurses are truly under appreciated
Ringshadow
I was once off on Christmas Eve, then laid off on Christmas (I was contracting but still)
Medmobster
Quit. Let some people die. They can’t all be important.
UncleGearjammer
7,5 billion people and climbing.... someone`'ll make more

If they can afford to be in American healthcare they're probably important
ChainmailleAddict
People die all the time, for all sorts of reasons. I wouldn't worry about it.
FuckingPhony
Hello Mr. President.
jhawker27
There are _so many people_. We can afford to lose a couple.

You made me laugh loud while on the bog. Well done.
Thank you
They're going to die eventually.

Sickcation time. Know the feeling. Aircraft maintenance. Haven't had a holiday off in over 6 years... unless it falls on my normal days off.
Travelcedric
Yup, same situation here. Luckily I am ine who makes sure that guys with kids get holidays off.
jarnou
No vacay in 6 years is not even legal in my country unless you agree to it (employer will have to pay for those days). Where u from?
TieDyedDino
It's illegal in my country as well, no matter if you agree to it. Mandatory to have 14 days off consecutively each year - rest you can agree
jbilly90
Good ole ‘merica
Holiday as in Christmas. I have had vacations but always during off peak times. Like middle of Feburary...
OrangeRanger
Welcome to America. Where one week PTO every year is the best thing ever.
Pandemoniumlust
It took me 4 years with my company. but I finally earned two weeks! and I work retail. lol.
DietCokeIsTheBest
2 weeks off work? Socialist? Commie?
Nope, just America. There's no law stating a company has to give a minimum amount of vacation time.
DenounceAll
What state do you work in? You could be eligible for time and a half for all holidays worked. Don't trust your employer to be in compliance
ShadowTallon
we pay triple time for christmas day and boxing day at my warehouse (west australia) normal rates for xmas eve n NYE
beerlady
State of anger at the moment.
Gaelwyn
Right, two of those days are holidays - Christmas and New Year’s Day, the other two are not.
nanyatenyaa
Most of the time, employers do not legally have to pay a premium for holidays.
Kumiyuki
If he’s a nurse, he’s gonna be getting holiday pay, if not double time.
greatwhitenorthbre
We get paid double time and a half! I work every holiday on purpose!
Kirsti1
We only get double time. But i work every holiday because I have shitty luck &thats how my schedule falls!
PrincessDonaldTrumpBANNED2
One hospital I worked at, the nurses got time and a half and comp time. But they were desperate to pull nurses in from other cities
Meanwhile, lab techs were still making 20% under the nation average for lab techs, who are also paid the least (by degree) in allied health
While being expected to work 60 hours a week because of shortages in our field too
Literally every hospital pays at least time and a half for holidays. Hospitals actually compete with other hospitals to fill positions
OP is complaining about not getting holiday pay for the shifts that aren’t on holidays. I get it but come on.
Its more likely that OP is working the night after Xmas. IE. I report in at midnight, so I get Xmas pay only if I work the 24th into 25th
2. But it I work the 25th into the 26th its not holiday. This is a universal night shit problem. However, the hospital will give a day off
3. Or they get a paid day and a day of over time. Lets say I worked 40 hours on Xmas week, since Xmas is a holiday that is a paid day off
I’ve worked 3rd shift. The calendar day used for pay depends on when you clock in. If you start at 12am on the 26th, that’s not a holiday.
crann
How does your manager not see that?
EveryBodyLovesMe
Used to work public safety shift work. Knew the next infinite years of schedule, sometimes it just works out to be shit.
The manager sees it. Manager is a c**t or incompetent.
MyNameIsJesusAndIStealHubcapsFromCars
porque no los dos?
I wrote her. She just said the minimum is 1 eve and one day of, but that doesn't mean you'll only work one holiday.
megmegmegmeg
I worked in a nursing home (HR) our nurses were only allowed to work 1 of those holidays- they got the other off... 1/2
ImGonnaKickYouRightSquareInTheNeeeuutz
I bet she ain't working that shit.
We asked who preferred to work which one and fitted in everyone else around. No one worked both. That really sucks :( 2/2
I get that there are only somany nurses available, but with you working both holidays, I feel that someone is getting preferential treatment
doctorbees
That's absolutely what's happening. My bf (also a nurse) was denied vacation once because the schedule person wanted that week for herself.
mywifelovesthedogmore
I want to say my conspiracy here: nursing shortage is manufactured. Hospitals don’t want to pay them what they’re worth.
Definitely. We're already overstaffed for the 25th. But she doesn't care.
fantasticalunicorn
I know my Aunt (in Ire) works Christmas every second year same with New Years, some nurses without small kids will swap with her though
Seggs
"How do i contact our HR department?"
I'm in nursing school. Managers like this are my worst nightmare.
intaglioguy
She's going to notice her scheduling "error" a few days before Xmas and let someone off so they end up not working either holiday. 1/
2/ Your manager knows exactly what she's done.
Is she off.........?
GUARANTEED the nurse manager is off... administrators don't have to deal with short staffing or pissed off patients during the crisis
I don't know. Probably. She does 9-5, no weekends. I think I've seen her 4 times during the last year.
NicnackpaddywhackSaskatchewanisgreat
If you live in Canada you probably are unionized. Take it up with them. They’ll back you up (or at least make it as fair as possible)
America. Already talked to my union rep. Basically said it's a dick move, but not against the rules.
