Might be a bit age delineated as well, I grew up in Christchurch in the 1960's and this wasn't any part of the songs and games we played. I suspect it's both age related and more Nth Island centred.
Always just good matured kidding around, and he always seems so fucking thrilled to meet and talk to people. The guy is just wholesome mischievous fun. Wish I had more of that. I'm more of the Brood and grumble type, but I admire people like him.
No, haka's a NZ (actually polynesian) thing - Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands and I'm sure Hawaii, Tahiti et al have their own variations of the practice. It can be quite exhilarating to see any two national teams facing off before a game. And often you'll see them performed as an honour or statement at many different occasion’s or venues. There's no cultural 'appropriation' involved when various person's get involved... Up until...
... the 1980's the All Blacks had got a bit perfunctory and a tad insulting with a lackadaisical and half hearted attitude about it that was cleared away when Buck Shelford became the captain and decided they needed to be taught to understand and put their heart into heart it. Since then there's been a constant debate over whether it helps or hinders (by exhausting their energy, or enervating opponents) them. And other NZ representatives have gotten a taste for it.
I think the Haka is why they can pretend that they don't have a chant so well. "Nah, mate, we don't have a chant, nahhhh...perish the thought, gowdluvyasun, nah, no chants 'round 'ere mate..."
And we all know the words... But evidently they've changed the words, coz those aren't the ones I know. Happens all the time, they change the words on songs on the radio when I am singing along too. All the time.
His appearance on Game Changer "Crowd Control" was phenomenal! All three comedians crushed it honestly, and it was good enough that they've done a spin off show for the concept.

The comments say that the first part means "Stand Together People" and the response is "All of Us"
That's a pretty badass chant!

Was going to say I miss when he used to post to YouTube, then I realized he only posts shorts...and I have shorts blocked.

It's how we find kiwis overseas in a crowd. It's hardwired into us to finish it

Is it a North Island thing? I'm from Otago, and never heard of this.

I mean, there's the Haka. can non-Maori people do the Haka or is that seen as cultural appropriation?

The funny thing is, as soon as he asked, it went right to the thing the woman called out. It is a Maori song wecall learn at primary school.

Comedians nowadays upload the part that changes every night so as not to spoil the written material

The problem is that the people in the clubs await that comedians do crowd work.
ringtailrho
That is genius and I never noticed!

Marc Maron spoke about it.

NZ rugby teams do the Haka which is really impressive.

I think this is the same level of knowledge as knowing that Viggo Mortensen broke his toe when he kicked that helmet ;)
