Might be a bit age delineated as well, I grew up in Christchurch in the 1960's and this wasn't any part of the songs and games we played. I suspect it's both age related and more Nth Island centred.

No, haka's a NZ (actually polynesian) thing - Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands and I'm sure Hawaii, Tahiti et al have their own variations of the practice. It can be quite exhilarating to see any two national teams facing off before a game. And often you'll see them performed as an honour or statement at many different occasion’s or venues.
