Why I'll take a slight pay cut for a job with a union and pension
itsocelot
I know others have said it but… Save what? Bills, gas, food, family needs, then spare change left.
disinformatique
Time for a visit to Mar-a-lago and exercise extreme thermal application?
bourbonandbaddecisions
Start saving what exactly? Social security is barely keeping people alive.
AshenLady
Yeah just let me build a whole nest egg in 30-90 days. I was just waiting for someone to green light that for me thanks. /s

The economic knock-on effects of this if it happens will be devastating. But hey, the already so wealthy it's disgusting class will profit
Kc0125
Damn, and my mom is planning to stop part time work and only have ss. She won't listen to me but she watches fox news and knows everything
OperatorWay
Time for them to wheel out the "real patriots die for the economy" wagon again like they did during COVID.
"There are more important things than living," according to Baltimore-born, bankrupted sports bar owner, radio commentator Dannie Scott Goeb, who cosplays as Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick:

that's where the crypto comes in
TofuGolem
To the majority of elderly people who voted for this: enjoy living the rest of your days in a gutter. You can consle yourself by thinking of the great big tax cuts wealthy people will get, and isn't that better than you having a roof over your head?
SkeletorOverlordofEvil
It's hard to save for a rainy day when the flood waters are already in your house.
clonedeeznuts
Even harder when you CHOSE to!live in a flood zone. I know a lot of people who voted for the con man and rely on these services.
OperatorWay
Even harder to save for a rainy year/decade.

A friend of mine is fond of saying: Doesn't matter how deep the water is if it's already over your head.

How many more millions will be killed by the fascists than the 1 million unnecessary Covid deaths first time around? If you can't save, sell your stuff and buy a car (EV if possible for near $0 running costs) to live in with no rent bills and ability to move to safer grounds.
aThingWithTheStufAndTheJunk
Don't worry they're making living in your car illegal in as many places as they can.
violentdosage
Download your SS statement from their site before you can’t.
JimboTCB
"People should start saving now?" With what? Half of Americans have less than $500 in savings, shit is going to go very wrong very fast if social security payments fail.
Frustaz
Come on there has to be someone on the left crazier than me. Put a bullet in this fucking douchebag's head
Imadethisaccounttopost
Wait, isn't one of the GOP Rules placed on SSA that you cannot have more than 2k in the bank?
Yet, they want you to start saving....

Ok if they are suspending benefits are they going to stop taking $$ out of my check??? Holey moley!

It's a coup. They are looting the system. Get ready to fight.
Seanspeed
It's not a coup. We all warned this would happen. Republicans haven't been shy about wanting to shut down Social Security for a long time. Americans voted for this. It's a democratically elected fascist government.
The701
It can be both. There was also substantial manipulation ahead of time from the wealthy class, Republicans, and hostile foreign powers: Billionaire-owned media outlets pushing right-wing propaganda and blocking endorsements of Democratic candidates, implementing various methods of voter suppression, and false information campaigns from Russia. And then allowing an unelected, unconfirmed billionaire and his thugs to have free access to critical and classified information and systems.
Selfawerewolf
Sorry but this is just the "champaign/sparkling wine" argument and it's totally unnecessary. It doesn't make even one bit of different whether they were democratically elected. They got there through money's influence on power and by propagandizing the electorate. Doesn't matter how you feel about what it's called.
neuronicle
Then call it something else that suit your feelings. Effectively it IS a coup and the election based on misinformation and constant lying was a part of that coup (and wasn't "democratic" in the true sense of the word at all, because of all that misonformation and constant lying, the Russian interfering and all). If you want to blame someone, blame those who are performing this coup-like special operation.

Going to start seeing WAY more homeless elderly, as well as more trying to re-enter the work force.
codenametrixie
I've already told trumpers their parents will move in with them after losing social security and medicare. They'll no longer be independent.
Humputse
Don't worry, being homeless is gonna be illegal.
sureasyourebornyourenevergoingtoseenounicorn
It already is in many places. They’ve made laws against being visibly homeless and using it to lock up people who have no homes and destroy their property.
Humputse

DOGE will start the Soylent Green Project, made of plankton, of course.

What am I supposed to save from. There is nothing left after I pay the bills. Nothing.
FelonyRaptor
That's exactly how it should be. Sorry about that.

If you're able bodied, be arrested for homelessness and be used for slave labor. If you're not, die. To be clear, this isn't a cold-hearted suggestion for you, this is their actual plan.
OkButWhyWereTheyFilming
I've been saving. Part of my paycheck goes into this investment called Social Security every month. [crying in car in parking lot at work]
METROlD
Right? Like there is this portion of excess money in our budgets that we can spend or save, depending on how responsible we are feeling. Like, OK well I eat a potato and a pack of ramen every day. Then theres rent, electric, and internet. When I was 20 I literally cancelled my electric for a year so I could afford rent. And that was in 1999. What are people supposed to do? Or better yet, what percentage of Americans need to be homeless before we realize the problem is systemic? 30%? 60%?
RoseTheSpecialEdTeacher
Then you'll have nothing to lose and you can start your Luigi phase. Sorry. Shouldn't have to go through that to get there, but everyone is too comfortable to actually do what needs to be done. Acting like they'll lose their homes if they go protest, or better yet arm themselves are march on state capitols...but the point of doing it is to make sure that doesn't happen. So, instead of being smart, we have to wait till everyone is starving.
catherinecc
Skip paying rent, buy a rifle that defeats body armor.
bearatrooper
An AR15 and 1,000 rounds of ammunition costs less than the median monthly rent in the US.
deadcardgamesarethebest
Same for me, and now that the SAVE plan has been blocked, I'm back to paying 600$ a month for a degree that got me less than 60K a year. I've just decided I'm done. I'm just not going to pay and will apply for deferment until the end of time. I'm done. Fuck em.
Zahnradfee
Is the SAVE plan the same as the SAVE act (which was about voter ID, IIRC)?
deadcardgamesarethebest
This is the one for Student loans that let us pay a super bare minimum.
OmnibusLatinName
Let me just strap on my savings helmet, jump in the ol' savings cannon, and shoot myself into savings land. :)
NomDeImguerre
This is a guy in the know. He's well aware of how slim the spending margins for people are. He's also trying to get a message across within the space of a headline, to people who won't read "lefty" stuff, against an administration (& media system) that is trying to silence messages like these. So, rather than fall over his choice of words, read between the lines. Shit is about to hit the fan, so be prepared, in EVERY way possible.
LylaLexie
Yeah what is it…there are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy?
fartharder
Woman I know has a little over a hundred dollars left for the month after bills and rent.

Rocks... To throw at these cunts
nation543
My dad gets like $1500 from social security and it goes straight to the mortgage. I pay utilities. The only reason we have power, heat, water, and internet, is because we're working together. I'm 40. There's no fucking way that this would work solo unless I'm making $40-50/hr.
mormonbatman
They're talking about people who are receiving social security benefits. But, also, there will be a ripple effect for everyone else.
PlanckEraWasMyBestEra
Yes, I'm pretty sure this person is as well. Those of us on benefits are on benefits because there *is* nothing to save or to spare.
Goldensands
TheGermanWhoHatesAmerica
I mean that is the GOP plan: Step one take away all help, benefits. Step 2: Force people to drain their money from their savings (and funel it into the richs pockets), Step 3: When People go bankrupt and homeless, put them in Jail or Prison, so that they can be used as dirtcheap labour slaves from there.
L4dead2
It’s like the game monopoly
Neurisko
Step 4: Somehow... fucking SOMEHOW... still blame it on Democrats.
TheGermanWhoHatesAmerica
it's nether a step nor a somehow. It will simply be told religiously like always to their enabling crowd while hoping they won't wake up until the Rich and Republicans are untouchable.

Precisely what I was thinking. People with disposably incomes don't understand that when you live on benefits, you've already cut the fat from the fat, there's nothing left but the barest bones - and you're meant to save from *that*?
T3sl4co1l
They're out to "save" you. By removing you from society.

Ironically they COULD live cheaper, if they had more money, so they could use it more strategically. (This also applies to how the supernrich can get richer faster)

It's incredibly difficult to get out of that situation.

mechanically separated meat - this is a process that involves using machines to separate meat from bones by means of forcing them through a sieve or a similar device/mesh, effectively squishing the remaining meat off the bones.
sureasyourebornyourenevergoingtoseenounicorn
That’s exactly why we’ll be hitting critical load so soon. I don’t know what these politicians think people are receiving, but it’s not a “set aside for a rainy day” fund!
VictusVonGuyver
Yeah, 25 years ago most of us have had savings. Now so many of us live paycheck to paycheck. The COVID years destroyed a lot of our savings.
rowanem33310
Oh man. I remember when Trump gave out money during covid expecting us all to put it into vacations and crud like that, literally everyone I know used it for rent and some groceries. Makes me think of that.

Just take out a 0% interest loan like all the billionaires do, then never repay it. Poor people are so stupid...

/s obvs.

More like save your breath. The crisis will reflect everywhere out of US as well
Rimgrimner
Funny that you are wrong. This wont be crushing for any other countries. This is pure suicide on the US side of things.

You know full well what country owns the navy that protects all seas, globally. Stop pretending that the unprecedented incompetence in The US governance won't affect every single country on the planet, and many of them negatively.
Rimgrimner
And now you wont. Dont let the door hit you on the way out.

I hope so. Thing is. USA and Europe used to hold roughly 50% of the world's power, vs about 10 for China, India, Russia, Africa and South-America each.

China has caught up a lot (attached chart doesn't even account for.PPP), Russia and India have cozied up, so now it's more like China 20, US 20, EU 20, India-Russia 20 and 10 and 10 for Africa and South-America.
Without an aligned USA no more Western majority/plurality. It's a massive shift in power dynamics.
boognish115
I remember a certain global depression that began as an American problem.

Things are more rigid than back then. But i can agree that its a concern.

You can save on detergents by not cleaning as much. You can save on food by going down to rice and beans. You can save on electricity by sitting in the dark, doing nothing.
You don't deserve to have anything, because your only purpose in life is to work and produce wealth for the owning class.
MechKelly
Look at this guy. Getting fancy rice and beans. We'll be back to medieval gruel soon.

Wow gruel, look at this fancy-pants. Try eating dirt.
DancingSwine
I've been eating medieval for a while, big batches, really healthy and cheap x)

Rice and beans? I've been foraging the last 2 years to supplement my foods. It's a damn good thing I eat mushrooms and know what is edible. But I sure am having a hankering for some billionaire I tell ya hwaht.

This will affect everyone, the benefits don't just fizzle into thin air when given to someone, that person spends it and that money goes into improving the local economy. It boggles my mind how people think government "spending" just vanishes. If this was in France they'd have burnt their country to the ground way before reaching this point. I thought Americans were supposed to be strong-willed, get fucking protesting.
The701
A relative of mine is out of work because their employer is heavily funded by the federal government. A Fox News addict where I work was surprised by that. "They don't work directly for the government and they lost their job? ...That wasn't supposed to happen." Genuinely puzzled by it. Zero concept of second-order effects. A two-year-old's understanding of the world.
Bignholy
And how did France get there? What hardship did they face that taught them the lessons needed? The generation that has been pushing this all their lives are finally succeeding, having turned the post-WWII bounty handed to them into scorched earth. The last, great effort of the Boomers to take everything they can, even into the grave.
It's just time for the US to learn the lessons Europe learned, or die trying.
BeefiusMaximus1
Strong willed? We're the most propagandized country on earth.
MissSiesta
No you're not. China is.
BeefiusMaximus1
I guess you know more than Google. Also, nice proof, I definitely believe a random stranger who is so dim they don't think they need a source to refute.
DangerTrain
Did you just take whatever the first result Google came back with with its AI or just not look into it? Your source is a search engine, what a solid reference there. Clown shit.

You feel you have less access to correct information than a citizen in China...?
DangerTrain
I think just this guy, personally, has less access to correct information, but that's entirely by their choice.
