I sat down, looked over, and the Deadpool cosplayer is talking with security. Okay, a bit weird... aaaand then security is on him, pinning him to the ground, and strapping his legs and arms down and disarming a loaded gun. Props to security for handling it so well; no one was hurt, there wasn't a huge scene, and they were able to handle the situation appropriately.

From what I understand it was an isolated incident, and the police were tipped off around noon by a confident of the guy. From what I heard, he kept asking the police to 'listen to him' and 'can I see some ID' (to which one officer did show him ID) and 'I'm being attacked'. Not by the cops, but by other things? I don't remember the exact wording, but it really sounded like the guy was mentally unstable (well, duh) and needed some serious help.

The downside?

The full email we got about the situation is below, and I am pissed as hell. Seriously? I talked to a few fellow cosplayers, namely Rocket Grunts with Pokemon plushies, and they have confirmed that they will be unable to take ANYTHING that isn't attached to their clothing inside. One dude purchased a VERY expensive Zoroark plushie and will be unable to wear it with the costume he got it for.

As for myself, I WAS cosplaying a shitty Bastion this year, based off the Halloween spray. The entire thing is a collection of cardboard boxes that I will now be unable to wear to con because I can take them on and off :///

I can understand the increased security! (Seriously- earlier today they had no metal detectors, nobody checking bags, and the fake-weapons checks they set up were NOT being enforced at all. Bad security, they NEEDED to fix it.)

I could even understand banning weapon props! But EVERYTHING? Do you know how expensive these tickets are??? I'm going to Phoenix Comic-Con because I like to COSPLAY and cosplay involves props! What is this going to mean for the lightsaber fight demos that were happening tomorrow? What does this mean for ME, the cosplayer, who is now unable to cosplay at the one big con I get to go to a year?

Basically unintended terrorism. Minimal action, vast reaction limiting freedoms.

So fucking stupid. This is exactly what terrorists want (extreme example but still applies) 1 isolated "attack" prevents everyone else.

Wear it anyway and see what they say. If they think it's on you, and how involved it is, they may let you through.

They are offering refunds now

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that sucks, can you get your money back? they ruined it for you..

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

They are offering refunds. I hope a lot of people take advantage.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Boycott the con, will suck at first but when they see how much traffic drops they'll reconsider

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Please boycott it. I don't want to have to stand in long lines today

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If they pull this kind of bullshit reaction then hopefully nobody will come next year

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Perhaps they should have just cancelled. I always say do it right or not at all. Don't half-ass it.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

Canceling mean ticket refunds. They want to keep the money

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Zylbrad, is that you?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

LMAO I wish bro, I wish.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's only weapon props, not all props that are prohibited, so cosplay it up! https://www.facebook.com/phoenixcomicon/posts/10155224649128567

My skin has been cleared, and my crops watered. Can't cosplay today since I'm already omw, but tomorrow is looking home free!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've been to cons that had very no brain prop/weapon policies. I've never been back.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lame. At least everyone is ok. Can't really blame cops for overreacting. the event is prob super confusing and stressfull for them...

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Shouldn't be too much different than any major sporting event. Historically speaking, they end in violence more often than conventions...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's why people don't cosplay as Carrot Top.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Apparently they were given security advice by the TSA. I'm guessing this con won't even exist next year.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Got any pictures of your cosplay? I always love to see how people do Bastion cosplays

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ahhh, no, I'm sorry. I can take some in the morning though. I'll post 'em first thing ????

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I'd like to see your Cosplay as well

Please tag me too!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

id like to see it as well

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome! Tag me when you do, I'd love to see it

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Almosa Comic-Con decided to change their policy too. From what I read its stricter than the change Phoenix Comic-Con is implementing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

as a vendor at other conventions, every booth probably had to scramble hardcore to try and get anything to stick the merch in. that will add

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

to the overhead of the cost of selling. hope it dose not affect smaller booths.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

That's just absurd. For a knee-jerk decision like this, they should be providing the supplies necessary themselves. *sigh*

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

safety in dumbers i suppose...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like this Con isn't gonna be around in the next two years.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Give us a photo of your cosplay

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At the end of the day it is their con, they run it how they wish. I'd sincerely consider contacting them about backing out however.

8 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 8

PAX just screens props, and doesn't allow anything heavy/big enough to be wielded as a bludgeoning weapon. At least, last I checked.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

convention center is likely the cause of the shutdown security clauses, but comic con needs to do weapon prop screening in future.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

PCC does screen props or at least they should be screening the props. Every year that I went to PCC they were checking props and peace (1)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2) bonding them before the prop could enter get onto the Con floor and vender hall

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know, I know- it's just aaaaagh. I wanna have fun with my friends, in or out of costume, but this really puts a damper on things. D:

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

The only part I think sucks is it doesn't sound like it's completely the conventions decision, sounds like it's partly the venue

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Then perhaps the con should seek a partial refund from the vendor. Elaborate cosplay is one of the main reasons people go to cons.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

As a fellow cosplayer, ASK FOR A REFUND. Nobody will look down on you for it. I have left several conventions because the staff ruined the 1

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

whole experience by removing what makes a huge part of the con. I'm just sorry it had to happen to your comic con experience. I wish you 2

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

the best of luck in the future.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Support is shown through attendance, why go if it's not something you can get behind? Refund is in order as it's not the same experience

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

They are offering refunds if you email them and ask. I hope a lot of people take advantage of their offer.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You purchased. Bummer yes, but their choice

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 9

In many cases refund is warranted when the merchant substantially changes the product. Not sure if that would apply here but it might

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

you dont even get refunded if you bought vip tickets for celebrities that don't show.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

No, they changed the rules after the ticket was purchased. Fraud.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wrong, if a previous comment is correct they are offering refunds: not fraud

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Fraud would require intent to deceive- though a refund is reasonable

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Can you say "security theater"?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Boycott for better rules/enforcement

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'll take "Reactions that solve nothing" for 500, Alex.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Contact them and request a refund. Let them know that without props, you have no reason to be there.

8 years ago | Likes 394 Dislikes 1

props on good advice! +1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OP should also check if they didn't follow proper security measures/laws from the get go for such a large convention.

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

This. And get other people who got screwed by their knee-jerk rule to do the same.

8 years ago | Likes 135 Dislikes 2

I attend a con every year and i full agree with the security measure. Safe > sorry.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 54

I agree they should ban arrows from archery ranges and popcorn from movie theaters in case someone chokes.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Well thats pretty shitty for you

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

*confidant

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can't every cosplayer take their costume on and off though? Just because yours is easier to disassemble may not mean you can't wear it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's more that it was a costume I have to actively maintain a grip on- just a pile of boxes I hold in place, really. Thus, it's a prop.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That sucks! Can you tweak it a bit so that it stays in place on its own? I'm sorry, I know nothing about what your character looks like.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tagged you in a post so you could see it... hope you don't mind? But yeah, not really, unless I wanna lose a hand and my peripheral vision

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you are a walking prop... I guess this gives you an excuse to step up your game for next con?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If they didn't and something happened, someone would sue them for 100000 million billion money. It is sad, but they have to consider it.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 11

Whats gonna happen with plushies or CARDBOARD? This is a complete overreaction, and this is coming from someone who RIGHT THERE.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

And someone who is right there will sue them if they see a chance to be filthy rich. Cardboard, knife, gun or bomb. Doesn't matter.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

idk maybe a bomb or something. crazy people can be crazy creative.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, I know what people tend to do with plushies. Strategically Placed Holes. That's what.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The solution to that is burning them.
