Greek Empire 323 BC.

Roman Empire 117 AD.

Byzantine Empire in the 500s.

Mongol Empire in 1279.

Spanish Empire in 1600

Swedish Empire 1600s.

This map be including their areas of influence. However, it is inaccurate. This is a better representation - http://imgur.com/mTPy5iC. Sorry for any confusion.

French controlled colonies of the last 300 years.

Russian Empire between 1721-1917.

Portuguese Empire 1778.

This was labelled the British Empire in the 1700s - 1800s. But it is not. It is a what if map had England defeated the Colonies in the American Revolution. Sorry for the confusion.

Ottoman Empire 1830.

The Dutch Empire.

Dark green areas were controlled by the Dutch West Indies Company; light green areas were controlled by the Dutch East India Company. In yellow the territories occupied later, during the 19th century.

British Empire in 1898.

Greater German Reich 1941-1942.

USA Controlled Areas 1867-1904.

I almost upvoted...sorry about the confusion. :p

The Soviet Union, including it's total sphere of influence, really ought to be included. We don't call that an "empire" today, but in terms

of actual control, compared to some of these, once upon a time Stalin was in charge of a big chunk of the world.

Yeah, I don't remember the British controlling the Philippines and Indonesia.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

or spain controlling all of morocco

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always find it fascinating that the British, such a small island, took control of so much of the world

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And now it's controlled by people who have an even smaller country, hey-o!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Imagine how pissed off Russia must have been now a days to remember how they sold Alaska.

Alexander didn't had a Greek empire, he was macedonian but it's still accurate

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Actually from the Macedon region of Greece. Huge sort of conflict between Greece and Macedonia.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I know that, but I have never seen it as Greek empire

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The british empire is so damned impressive

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is no such thing as Alexander Greek empire. Alexander the Great was Macedonian, that's why it was called Alexander Macedon.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#10 Central America was not part of the British empire. This is inaccurate.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Swedish empire is dead wrong though.

Im shocked to be asking this as an America... I know Alaska is big, dont get me wrong. But is it actually THAT big? looks like 1/2 the US

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

on maps pieces of land are overrepresented in size. Though: https://matadornetwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/20100428-alaska.gif

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Alaska is still pretty big. 3 times the size of Texas?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is a cool map that doesnt distort the transition from globe to 2d image that much: (1/2)
