Seven rocky planets orbiting a nearby star called Trappist-1 are roughly the size of Earth. They all have the confitions for life and 3 of them could already have alien life.

Scientists say it will take a decade to find out if there is alien life on the planets or not.

You don't understand how much I NEED to see complex alien life within my lifetime. PLEASE

I hereby claim planet F for my own.

It's Andromeda! Habitats 1-7 have been discovered pathfinder

This is awesome! I only hope I live long enough where we a relocated to another planet.

You won't have to wait very long. Nasa planning to put humans on mars in the 30s.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yes, but not us. They'll use smart and strong or rich people for that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you find out if there's life?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a hard time believing I can live on the first planet. I can't stand 26 C.. much less 80 C.

If your mom goes to space, it'll be in search of Planet D.

bitch, it might be.

Girls could go to D, and guys can go to E. E looks cooler in temperature.

Petition to call one Pluto II so that Pluto can be a planet again

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As Belgians, It should be our mission to go to that system, colonize some planets and start a Trappist brewery over there.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I'd prefer to spend our taxes on this instead of our 6 governments.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is kinda misconstrued. Yes, they are planets in the habital zone. Yes they are near. No, we have no idea what it looks like.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I know, this sort of loose hype frustrates me. Three of them could have liquid water on the surface, the rest could with right atmospheres.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is barely a red dwarf, almost brown. Lots of these, none in the catalog past 500ly. Dark matter is ordinary. Sticking to MACHO theory!

Are those earths flat too?

Just 39 light years away, ill take my bicycle, see you guys when we get there. 100°C, better take some sun screen

7 Earth sized planets. 3 that could have ice or water. No Earth-like planets period.

Everytime I read thappist my head says the rapist.

yep

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a kind of beer, since the star is originally discovered by a Belgian telescope called Trappist.

Whenever I hear someone say nearby star I feel the need to say "nearby" meaning millions of light years

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

In this case it's only 40 lys though. :) That's just across the street!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

37 light years btw

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

With in the 100s, not millions, is usually the metric of near by.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Spoilers no life found.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 6

Considering the system is 39 light years away, I don't think we'll be able to tell...

Maybe not intelligent life. Could be plant life tho?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Even bacteria is a huge finding.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Considering how long it took them to find it I doubt it's too easy to tell.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is extremely misleading. We found 7 planets with masses similar to Earth orbiting a red dwarf star 37 ly away from us.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually that's 39 ly away.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Three of those planets are within the habitable zone of their star, meaning they COULD have liquid water on their surfaces.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We know nothing about their atmospheres except that all but one of them is a rocky planet. In the search for planets with life on them,

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These three look like pretty good candidates. However, they are so close to their star that they very well might be tidally locked, which

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would pretty much mean there's no way they could support life.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah any planet in Earth's position without a massive satellite is going to be a bit of a write-off.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What if we are the extra terrestrials in the movies guys!?!?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We'd need much better spaceships for that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're living in the prequel.

Calm down there, Jar Jar.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a Belgian, Trappist is a type of beer to me, nothing else.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

As an American, Trappists are dang tasty.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Name them Enkel, Dubbel, Tripel, Quadrupel, and so on.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

There's more famous belgian beer types, but there's also more planets... I absolutely second your motion there.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Apparently we made a telescope, which was put somewhere else because of crappy sight here, and we named that telescope trappist, 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Which is an abbreviation but I forgot for what, and then they discovered the star and it's planets and so they called the star Trappist. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And the German scientist (don't know his name) said he was pitching that they name the planets after Belgian beers!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What makes me sad is, that even if we discovered life on them tomorrow and sent a message, it will take 40 years for them to even receive it

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's assuming you're sending the message with light. Other methods will take considerably longer.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Certainly. But because of this nobody would consider sending a probe or even humans there. So it is reasonable to assume we'd try radio >

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

at first.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

let alone answer. I will be long dead before we get a message back. :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Post overhypes probability of life on these planets, plus any life would likely be less advanced than us.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why would it be less advanced than us? Red dwarves can become veeeeery old. How old is this star? Maybe it has been around longer than the >

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

sun? Where do I find the information about it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And yes - I am aware chances are slim. Life is not very common. There was a string of rare events that lead to the earth being so friendly.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All we know is this star is older than 500 mil. years. However, it's metallicity is much higher than the Sun's, which could mean it formed

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After the Sun did. As for intelligent life, it seems to me as though one of us would've already detected waves from the other at this point,
