Nov 9, 2016 2:49 PM

Cause I'm a marine biologist.

My favorite, the California sea hare.

That looks like a sea potato.

Cool. Haven't seen this one yet.

I can tell it's from California by the way that it is

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am to! I worked with polychaetes, what about you?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All kinds of things, but mostly inverts and algae. I feel like all of us marine biology imgurians should have a group!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP Now I can't imagine you not looking exactly like Amy adams

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh good, that's exactly who I look like! Except totally different.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

My favorite slug is the giant black hare! 15 lbs of pure sluggy goodness

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then call them nudies or nudibranchs. Sea slugs is driving me crazy!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too, but when one is talking to people that aren't biologists, one uses popular vernacular. The term also includes more than nudis, (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and we've got all kinds on here today.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All sea slugs are awesome, but I fell in love with this little one the first time I saw it! http://imgur.com/kBcS7Yi

Tambja verconis

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What makes this one your favorite?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mostly cause it looks like a rabbit. But also, they can get really big, can "ink" as a form of defense, and I see lots when I dive.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Marine biologist? Why didn't you say architect?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel like I'm missing a reference here. Because I'm not an architect...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, Seinfeld reference. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0u8KUgUqprw - great episode if you like that show

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that you George Costanza?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey @OP I was wondering, but why are sea slugs sometimes called hares? Is it because they have things that look like rabbit ears?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You got it! Those are called rhinophores and they are chemoreceptors. They sense chemicals to locate food, evade predators, etc.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's nice to know. Do you enjoy what you do? When I was a kid I wanted to be a marine biologist, but wound up getting into computers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm more on the education side of things at the moment, which i do love, but would like to get back into research. Computers are cool, too!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why are sea slugs either a technicolor orgasm or ugly as sin?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on whether they need to blend in or warn predators of a toxin. Even some of the bright ones are blending in with corals or sponges.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the answer.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He's not the prettiest of slugs, but SlugsLivesMatter! Ok..that was awful..

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You have the choice of every fantastic and colorful sea slug and you chose the living sweet potato as your favorite?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha yeah...it's only very slightly my favorite. So many close-second favorites to choose from...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't "NUDIBRANCH" a cooler word?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op how many types of sea slugs can photosynthesis? Also what's the difference between them and nudibranches?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are around 400 species in the order that potentially have the ability, but only a handful of them can keep living chloroplasts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They look similar to nudis, but they have different methods of feeding, different rhinophores. A few species still have shells, nudis don't.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I saw one of those on a beach, washed up and still alive. It looked like a human heart. I kept trying to put in the water, but it washed up.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good on you for trying!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't sea any hare.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

@OP do a post and learn us about sea slugs.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I have much to teach you....

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I support this motion

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I started one, but I'm going to be late for work now. I will deliver later, I promise!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you work with cute sea slugs right now?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sadly, not right now...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn :( even tho it might not be cute like them, I really hope it's interesting!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah, then maybe you can get us some fresh pictures.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Please.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good job on picking a username. Always relevant!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which is funny, because I generally don't leave snarky comments.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't look at any of your previous comments, so honestly thought it was your thing. I like snark.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The picture is just fine, you're just upset it looks like a potato.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, no, I actually like this one; I haven't seen it 20 times before.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh thats what you meant by fresh, i thought you meant its quality, sorry im still sleepy.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey, hi. I have my degree in marine biology too... How do I get a job? (Asking for a friend)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If your friend finds a permanent job, lemme know how. I do a lot of bouncing from lab to lab. If you have labs or an aquarium nearby 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Find out about volunteering. It sucks to not get paid, but there's a lot to be said for a foot in the door (cliche, i know).

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You've seen some stuff, apparently

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You should probably get yourself checked

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Nah. You're thinking of a Gooey Duck, but that's a clam.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Geoduck. ;)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are sea slugs venomous? I'm genuinely curious cause usually bright and vivid colored organisms tend to be.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, some of them secrete toxins! Others collect stinging cells from the jellies they eat and can use them to sting predators.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I should make a clarification. They can be toxic/hazardous to things that try to eat them, but they don't have venom in their bite.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ahh ok, that's good to know and pretty interesting. Thank you for your information!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh good. I have questions. What happens when you put salt on a sea slug? Also, can you cross breed them to match all toothpaste flavors?

9 years ago | Likes 189 Dislikes 2

They live in saltwater.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

They're gradually evolving an immunity to salt so when they leave the water to take over the world with other molluscs we have no defense.

9 years ago | Likes 239 Dislikes 0

May i ask why its your favorite?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Mostly because it looks like a rabbit! But it also can ink and swim away, and one type is the biggest of sea slugs.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But really, if you took a sea slug out of the water and covered it in salt, I'm guessing it would look very similar to salting a land slug.

9 years ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 0

thanks for the knowledge

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would think so too, pure salt vs salt water are only just slightly different in salt content

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

There are already more flavors of slug than toothpaste. Just pick your favorite color!

9 years ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 0

Any that look like Aquafresh?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So why is the Cali sea bunny your favorite?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The look like rabbits! They also ink and can swim away from predators, are really big, and I can almost always find one when I dive.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you should make a post about sea slugs.

9 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Definitly! A scientific post about sea slugs. Why are they so shiny and fluffy. Sooo much questions! Caaaaaptaaaain x.x

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As soon as i get home from work!

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

please tag me when you do

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sure!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Me too please

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a marine biologist too! UPVOTE ALL THE SEA SLUGS!

9 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 1

Just a scuba diver, but yes for slugs/nudibranchs! All the weird and cutes!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wanna major in marine biology in college!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do it! Some courses are like David Attenborough documentaries! And that's no exaggeration

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me 3! My favourites are Sacoglossans that do kleptoplasty!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This will be mentioned in my post later, but really deserves it's own!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me 4. In final year of uni. Fave invertebrate Cephalopoda.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But gotta love the elasmobranchs especially basking sharks

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

aye they're cool! and so is the Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus). it lives in the deep, has toxic meat, and can be 120y/o. bad ass.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ohhhh they are amazing. I heard the new tecnique to measure there age was something with the eyes. What you Fave tropical fish

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

really, not the otoliths? that's so cool, I've got to google dat shit. fav fish is Humuhumunukunukuapua`a :P (I have lived in Hawaii). you?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too! Nudibranchs are one of my all time faves!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Marine biologists unite! What's your favorite-thingy-in-the-sea?

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

Ecologist here. Schyphozoans! Jellies will rule the seas!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pompeii worm

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ctenophores!!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My boy!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am also a marine biologist and I absolutely detest california sea hares. Every tried to take care of 10 of them in a small closed system?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have not personally, but i know they can be a pain in aquaria. I'm curious, what are you doing with 10 in a small closed system?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I work in a research lab on a college campus, and an animal physiology class needed a bunch for whatever reason, and we only had 1 tank open

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They smell like rotting carcasses, and they literally try to posion themselves by inking everywhere.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't know how to edit on my phone. Too many dashes in that phrase up there.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

no worries :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

god that's a hard question. Elasmobranchii perhaps? And minke whales because of their unique physiology. Hydroids and slugs are pretty tho

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

what about you?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

How to choose...definitely gotta say I looove nudibranchs, but cephalopods are a close second. Molluscs are amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Nudibranchs are my faaav :D

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes Molluscs are fascinating creatures. btw I posted info about sea slugs. would you mind looking over to see if I wrote something wrong?
