I did a thing! ^ This is the finished product. ^
A buddy of mine jokingly suggested that I 'lift' my couch (like you would lift a truck). I don't have any carpentry knowledge, no tools besides a basic kit, and none of my friends knew much, either. So I built it.
I figured i could turn my small TV room into a home theater, raise my sectional couch, and put a loveseat on the floor in front of it. I talked to friends & family, drew up some plans, and did a thing.

Plans for the upper and front sides of the platform. It's designed to be 2' 8" tall, and is constructed mainly out of 4x4 pillars and 2x4 framing.
The section for the chaise will have a cabinet with shelves and a door for the cats. Also steps up in front of the cat door.

Bottom and back side views (bottom is from above, if that makes sense).
The diagonal crossbeams are to prevent swaying and to move some of the weight of the couche to the center 4x4 columns.
Also sketches of the steps.

Left and right side views. The right side will have a door so I can crawl inside to store stuff and fetch the cats. Also a cat door and steps up in front of the cat door.

Sketches of the plywood cutouts for the 2 sides with doors/shelves/steps.
also my count of wood beams and such for buying lumber.

The first part to be put together. We started with the loveseat half, and this is the framing for the front and back of that platform.

Front and back sides attached. feat. half of my dad.

Joists and front-back crossbeams have been added.

Now the plywood is on, too. I only bothered putting plywood on the top and the sides that will face outward. More airflow and less weight. Forgot to take this pic when it was done, so nvm the other stuff behind it.

The framing for the platform for the chaise went up really fast in one afternoon.

Now with cabinet and joists on the chaise platform! No shelves yet. Feat. my friend "chi chi".

Same as above pic, but different angle.

The plywood has been installed on the entire platform now, and we've got it sanded. Great progress!

Pic showing the front of the chaise with cabinet and cat door. Shelves are in the cabinet, but the pegs to mount them aren't installed yet.

Carpet has been installed on the top of the loveseat platform. It was a bit of a pain to work with, since the carpet I got was SUPER stiff, but the quality is otherwise great and it was cheap.

Steps in progress/done left/right.

Finally finished and installed inside. I still need to pick up a loveseat to go in front, but 95% of the work is done.

I am personally fairly proud of the job I did installing the carpet.

Another shot. Feat. sexy poses.

Loveseat installed, project complete. Cat tax included, too.

View looking down from up top.

View of the screen. Feat minor wife tax.

I love this thing you did!!

That is a great idea for a room with little space. Great plans and follow through!

Levels Jerry!

We did this in my college apartment, except we just threw the love seat on top of the coffee table. It was surprisingly secure.

But.. why?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because I figured I could manage it. Because I don't need some culturally accepted reason to accomplish something. Because I'm me.

Maybe you don't know carpentry @op but those are some pretty plans

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks. I had no carpentry experience, but I spent a lot of time on the plans.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So the cat door opens to the inside of the construction? I know nothing about cats, but won't the space get dirty if the cats frequent it?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Having owned cats all my life, no issues apart from the very rare vomit. This I can clean via the human sized door.

Nice work

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Okay but feet right next to your head isn't the best

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

There is a solid 13" space of carpet for feet. Plus the upper sectional is really roomy, so it's not been an issue yet.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

after giving it a thought, i agree. maybe having the deck little lower would be better.

Looks fun!!

We had this in my student house. Great job.

Ah the good ol' double decker couch.

Speed-scrolled all the way through this just to see if someone would make this reference. Was. It disappointed.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

exactly what I was thinking, but it doesn't have cup holders OR an icechest....

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

That idea is just the worst

I think you should have made it shorter. The feet are right at head height. They should be closer to stomach height.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The height is so I can store stuff underneath and fetch the cats if needed from below. Also because it seemed like fun.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Start monitoring program for foundation settlement. That thing looks heavy as fuck.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

While heavy, it was carryable by two people per peice. I'm keeping an eye out tho.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just having fun re: settlement monitoring. Nice job, enjoy your newfound hobby! (or just your new theater, as case may be..)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Might go either way, haha

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Am I the only one who wonders how the fuck you got that massive thing from your backyard into your little TV room?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The room has a sliding glass door (I had to install blackout curtains). The sliding door is massive. In this case, JUST enough for each part

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good on you, mate! Fuck all these haters on here - you built it, you're proud of it, you love it. That's fantastic. Cheers!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't noticed any, really.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your wife is a minor?

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

Depends on where op is. Might be legal there.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Lol no. By minor I meant that she was barely visible in the pic.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

*smacks head on projector*

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was a concern, but despite how close it looks, there is close to half a foot of space. No super tall guys in the middle spot tho.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They do have some nice low-profile mounts that would reduce that worry even more, only downside is the adjustments you can make are reduced.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Over engineered. Beautifully so. Just my style. So much X-bracing! F.S. of ~12 with the 8" centers. Lol. Shame about the middle X brace tho!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This isn't a lift kit- it's another storey in the house! I'd have gone w 1x4s (or ripped 2x4s), made base a bit wider for walking w.o ...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...Falling off the edge. Maybe a 'top' "X" brace in the middle, instead of the 1 diagonal, allowing passage. But this rocks! Bravo sir!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is awesome. And..... Everything is awesome.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Awesome game too!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't see anyone ask, what game were you playing?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My wife was watching a ProtonJon video on YouTube when I took that picture.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like an emulation of FFV? I think I see Bartz, Faris and Krile.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why did you make it that high? Half the height would have still allowed you to see over the couch in front. Like movie theatre seating.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So that I can for underneath it. To store stuff and to clean/fetch cats under it. Also because it now doubles as a hidey hole.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fair enough. As long as there was a rationale for it. Seemed like overkill. But storage is good.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Grats on the craftsmanship, but this seems like a terrible idea. It also looks horrendous.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Form over function bud. This has 5 great places to sit and watch something with your buddies.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, be nice to our white trash Americans!

8 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 1

If you don't have carpentry experience, does the measuring tape show an inch off?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have carpentry knowledge and I can assure you, my plans would be terrible..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the compliment. I legit just drew what I thought would work. I had carpentry XP, but an eye for physics.
