Now it has to go thru 3 months and $100,000 of maintenance.

got to ride in a CH53 during a barrell roll. Both the Colonel flying and the bird were retiring the next day. Best gunner seat ride ever.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's awesome. Perfect combination of zero fucks to give.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"DO A BARREL ROLL!"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What nation is flying that one?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Netherlands! Probably my favorite design on a jet

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The apache

JAFO

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I understood this reference. Best show ever staring Dana Carvy and Dick Butkus.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh wow I remember the show now. I am more of a fan of the movie with Roy Scheider and Malcolm McDowell.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why has no one made that Apache fire upvotes by now?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How effective are those flares in a real missile lock on situation

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're more for MANPAD systems (Man Portable Air Defense) like the Stinger and Igla. Proper air defense annihilates attack helicopters.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

*before the pilot even sees any alarms...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Going inverted just means the oil is kept in the system for a change

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

My first time on a helicopter I was told not to worry until it stopped leaking fluid.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*sensible chuckle*

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Fixed wing from what I read. Normal helicopters can't do that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Its got some elevators in the back, and i imagine the cg is waaaaay ahead of them.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How does no one realize this is fake AF?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

It looks fake because of the camera tracking.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thought so too, but apparently it's not. This gif seems to be sped up, reason why it looks so fake. /watch?v=zzKYogDjagw

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because it isn't. I saw the RNLAF display at the Koksijde Air Show in Belgium back in 2011.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It actually doesn’t do a straight 360. It pulls out to the right instead of going straight over.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That does not look like 360°.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 9

360 in the vertical direction

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

So it does a backflip backflip?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If it flipped 180 degrees it would be upside down. A 360 would be a complete flip returning to the upright orientation.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... We sure that's not a clip from Airwolf?

8 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 0

Dude! I was going to say just the first time I saw a helicopter do that shit was on Airwolf.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

it looked nothing like a wolf should called it airorca or airpanda

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stringfellow is such a great name.

Calling all Jan Michael Vincent’s!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Loved this show. Wonder why it never got a remake. Worse shows have.

Aaaaand now i have the song in my head.....

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also done in an episode of Blue Thunder.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Episode? It was in the film...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There was also a short lived series based on the movie. I only saw about half the movie so didn't know it was in the movie, too.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its the Dutch Demo team (could tell by the orange F-16) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnmFnB-tSjs

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's my childhood right there. :)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is this from a video game?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Looks like it's the RNLAF (dutch) demo team and that the video is sped up slightly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It only looks like a game becasue of the camera tracking and it's sped up. I know it's not a game becasue games never model wake vortices.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think so, the physics don't look very realistic

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Its real, the Dutch Demo team https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnmFnB-tSjs

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you keep the helicopter in positive "G's it does no damage to it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Your name makes me want to believe you, but isn't this maneuver at least 4Gs ? That's unusual stress, no?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seems like it comes to a complete standstill by the time it's up-side down. Converting all that forward momentum into lift, then vice versa.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

the paint job on that dutch f16 is one of my favorites. :) https://2012.natodays.cz/files/gallery/2012/Zpravy/DN2012-holandsko1.jpg

ROAR

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

seems like it's about to do pugachev cobra manuever

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And the groan from the ground and maintenance crew could be heard for miles....

8 years ago | Likes 538 Dislikes 3

I will soon understand I guess haha

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Goodbye strap packs

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not like they didn't know it was coming, its for an air show. So they've probably been groaning for weeks in preparation.

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 2

For sure, but they could always hope that the pilot forgot about doing the manoeuvre... :P

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Fucking what are those rotors made of?!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well alright. That answers my question. Steel, titanium, graphite, a fiberglass.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I figured the link was easier than posting a 5-chain comment.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

043 needs flares...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Ah, crap... Airshow? Craaaap."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How come? Does doing the flip miss align stuff or something?

8 years ago | Likes 158 Dislikes 2

Typically on helicopters that aren't built for them types of maneuvers it twists the whole airframe and and subsequently destroys it.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

the propeller blades create a lot of gyroscopic force, the tips of the blades go supersonic, so they can only handle so much AOA...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*misalign

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A whole lot of stress on everything, and while capable of such manoeuvres it needs a full overhaul after to ensure no damage / fractures

8 years ago | Likes 311 Dislikes 3

Define "overhaul"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Sure, but NDI is happy as a fucking group of puppies, they get to do something! Find dem cracks!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd assume the biggest groan is from ordinance who has to restock the flares.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a former helicopter airframe mechanic I can confirm

8 years ago | Likes 191 Dislikes 1

Hello fellow 15G

As a former helicopter powertrain mechanic can also confirm

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It is pretty popular at air shows. Do they set them up any differently if they know in advance?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as a party clown and i confirm.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an helicopter airframer I also can confirm

Every time?! Make the damn pilots help!

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 4

Former F-16 crew chief, and I've had pilots help pull panels for over-g inspections. They generally also bring a case of beer.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Every time they do a manoeuvre that puts more than normal stress on the aircraft... = full overhaul (generally)

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

What does an overhaul consist of?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

the pilots don't know how to do any of that maintenance stuff...their skill lies within the cockpit and no further

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Engineer here who became a pilot. Don't assume I have any skill in the cockpit either...

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

No! Those fucking cowboys are liable to break more shit than fix it, no I'd rather just fix it without them, thank you.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Please no. Pilots do enough to break the aircraft, don't need them trying to play doctor as well.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Bahahaha make the pilots help. That's cute.

8 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

He thinks pilots would know what to do for maintenance of their craft like the ground crew. That's adorable.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

F35 crew chief here, our ProSup told a couple of us newer guys that he’s seen a couple times since cross training to 35’s that the pilot 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

KEEP THE PILOTS AWAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT UNLESS THEY'RE FLYING IT JFC

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Am I alone in thinking they should learn at least some of the basics of repair, just in case they need to do field repairs?
