Oh YAY a period post!

Wait! Don't leave! Hear me out.

This is probably what most of you are using, either pads, tampons, or a combination of both.of both.

Of course all these products can be a pain, not only to use, but to buy, store, carry around, and dispose of.

Let me introduce you to a little known alternative: The menstural cup

There are lots of brands depending on where you live, the most popular being the Diva Cup (US) and the MoonCup (UK).

The cup basically works by being inserted while folded or rolled and allowed to expand in the vagina. Then it sits inside the vagina and collects menstrual fluid which is then emptied and rinsed out with soap and water.

Now I know what you're thinking...

You want me to RINSE IT OUT?

You're joking.

But there are actually a lot of positives (and its not even that gross).

Most (but not all) tampons and pads have various chemicals added, including bleach to make them nice and white (and in some case more absorbent) which cups are pure silicone.

No more carrying around tons of "extra supplies" that just clutter up your purse.

As far as being environmentally friendly, it's hard to compare going through hundred of tampons a year to a single piece of silicone. It is also much easier to maintain and keep hygienic than some of the reusable pads and sponges I've seen as "green" period products.

How am I gonna put that INSIDE me? It's so BIG?
I know it looks large but it is very easy to insert (I won't go into the nitty gritty, but there are plenty of youtube videos and help websites) and you do not feel it at all.

This one is a bit shakier in terms of actual science but many women, including myself, report less cramps. This is particularly true is you get cramps from wearing tampons.

This is probably the main reason I initially purchased a menstrual cup. Periods are expensive as shit. I was spending at least $10 a month if not more. Most cups can be found on amazon for around $25-$30 so if you use it for at least 4 months you are already saving money.

Tampons, being basically a sponge, absorb EVERYTHING, and in case you didn't notice, you're body is supposed to have some moisture down there. Tampons can lead to dry vaginas which are no fun for anyone and have to potential to cause imbalances and even yeast infections.

THIS IS ACTUALLY THE BEST PART. You empty the cup twice a day. TWICE. Once in the morning when you get up, and once before bed. That. Is. It. No worrying about if I have enough time to run to the bathroom before I start leaking, no more calculating how long you've had a tampon in. The cup holds 1 oz of liquid, and the average period is only 1 to 1.4 oz, even with those who have very heavy periods I have never heard of anyone having to empty it more than 3 times a day.

Now I know some of you are still going to be grossed out by the reusable thing.

For you I suggest the softcup, which has a lot of the same advantages but is disposable. And ladies.....

It is the only product that you can have in during intercourse!

Thanks for reading, this is my first post.
Here is a kitten.

I've got one, and I was VERY skeptical at first, but I love it now!

As a guy, I learned something new today that I'll probably remember forever instead of things I will actually need to know.

And these cups apparently don't cause toxic shock syndrome, which can, you know, kill you (source: My girlfriend who swears by these things)

12 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Don't forget to mention that it lasts for 10 years!

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They take time to adjust too, but they are great!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cup to the rescue!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I learned something new today. I probably still won't use the cup but thanks for the information, OP.

I love my Diva Cup, it's the best thing I've done for my vagina since sex.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

100% the best. Would totally recommend. And the softcups, too, for less messy period sex.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, it's easy to sterilise. Boiling water for 10 minutes, or hand sanitiser/wipes.

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Protip: It takes some getting used to, so don't give up after the first try, ladies!

When my best friend told me about this I thought ew a blood cup, but I tried it and I feel like my vagina is happier

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Spread the word!

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is a fair question,How do you remove it without...spillage.

12 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Im sorry I asked XD.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Carefully.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Also, if you remove it when sitting on a toilet, there's no problem.

12 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I do it in the shower in the mornings, and just over a toilet at night. Rinse well, wash you hands, and you're fine.

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I used to use one before my hysterectomy. I loved it!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I got tired of buying pads etc. so now I'm just using toilet paper. I guess I'm pretty weirdo.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Might as well drop the $30 once and use a cup. More reliable.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You must have the lightest period evah. Lucky.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

BEST thing about using my Diva Cup is NO GODFORSAKEN STINK!!! Urg...just remembering that slaughter house stench. MUCH happier now!!!

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I just bought one. I can't wait to try it. Thanks OP

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I use a meluna cup! It's easy and way cleaner than tampons. No more dogs shredding my menses across the bathroom floor!

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

omg my dogs did that too!! we learned to keep the bathroom trash can in the closet when we found my dog eating one of my used tampons

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you penis for not bleeding once a month.

12 years ago | Likes 174 Dislikes 2

Eternal gratitude indeed.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MY PENIS ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BLEED ONCE A MONTH!?

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

LUCKY!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Amen.

12 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I just can't think of a great enough way to show mine how thankful i am that it doesn't bleed once a month

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Shove it up something that does?

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That just might do!!!

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Real talk question. When you are sleeping wouldn't there be leakage?

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Nope, it suctions to the cervix, so the blood drops straight from uterus into there- no leakage at all. I can rest easy during my periods!

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I use a menstrual cup and it is the GREATEST THING EVER.

12 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 7

I LOVE MY CUP! CUPPY CUPPY CUP! It makes everything better.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I have a Mooncup. It is a fucking godsend.

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

There is a nature and saving the environment joke in there, but I just... can't...

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

cup my mind around it? cup something something.... I'm not witty....

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can we get a witty person in here?!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have in during sex? No way. Diaphragms rub my cock raw, I can't imagine what this cup would do. Probably stab me in the urethra.

12 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 1

It's nothing like a diaphragm. The plastic that is used is super flexible - a lot like a condom, but not.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My boyfriend couldn't even feel it.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Noooo, the instead softcup one, not the others. It's like a saran wrap kind of plastic and 100% soft. You would hear it before feel it

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OH GOD.

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

When I go back to having periods I'm going to try this thingy. Blood doesn't bother me.

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's great!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I tried one of those and when I took it out blood spilled all over my friend's bathroom.

12 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Ur doin' it wrong

12 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

ew omfg

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 11

What are you, 10?

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Keep trying. Sit on the toilet. Pinch, turn, pull. Steady, steady. Good luck!

12 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Did you rip it out like an Aztec priest rips out his sacrifice's heart??

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's wonderfully accurate.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im a guy why am I reading this

12 years ago | Likes 145 Dislikes 4

Because the post told me to read it and I'm in an obedient mood right now.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i kept reading it for the gifs

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

because things people dont understand fascinate them

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

because now we know.. and knowledge is power?

12 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

You might one day have female children who could need this information. *shrug*

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was intriguing in a weird way

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It was! but still... icky lol

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

To help your lady friends?

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

But, we have none...

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In my experience, there's nothing the ladies prefer to having their guy friends advise them on feminine hygiene products. ;)

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

*red-headed duck* (At least, I think it would be.)

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Been using this for 8 years now. I have changed the cup every 3 years, for the cost of 30e each. Totally worth if you live in a country 1/2

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

where hand showers are by default in every toilet. Makes it easy to clean the cup and yourself. 2/2

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And by changing the cup I mean buying new one ;)

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

As a veteran user: Do you have any tips on how to make sure the cup seals? 9/10 doesn't unfold properly when inside, which I tend to find~

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

~out circa 5 mins later when I start leaking again. Is there a trick that doesn't involve turning/wriggling it (cuz that doesn't work)?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I usually insert while in a squatting position with legs spread wide which will open your muscles and give the cup more room to expand.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I rarely have that problem, because I usually "can feel" if it doesn't unfold properly. Could it be that the cup is little bit too big?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I already use the smallest there is (which is stupid because I bleed a loooot). And I don't feel a damn thing when it's up there.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

:( Can you reach to "check it" by hand? Also maybe giving it a little twist around after inserting could help it to unfold.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The turn has always worked for me- Sometimes I have to let air in as I'm getting it further into place, which helps it unfold & seal.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I usually do that, too, but it's a hit and miss. (and miss and miss and miss...) I'm never 100& sure whether there's air in it or not.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bummer. It probably took me 4-5 cycles to be confident in my cuppabilities. Worth it in the end. I hope it gets easier for you!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Me, too =_= I once thought I had it, but then there was an accident. It's an awesome idea, but just so annoyingly unreliable.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I lol'd at cuppabilities!
