Four pieces of pine make the basic shape. Three are shown here- one 6mm plank and two 3mm strips, making up the sides and one flat of the scabbard. A piece of linen has gone into the blade groove, as per the existing scabbard finds from the period.
This sucked with a Dremel, but it got done. Shaping and cutting the wood further.
A basic scabbard rough out. I didn't take a picture but there's a piece of sheepskin inside the scabbard, facing a square of oiled wool, to cushion the blade going in.
A strap-slide. This is based on some of the leather finds from Anglo-Danish York, where this older late Roman/early Saxon method of suspending the blade seemed popular. This is carved and polished from antler.
Sheet sander and hand plane to reduce the scabbard's profile and round it off.
Smooth and silky. It was almost a shame to cover up the grain of the wood, but authenticity has its demands.
Again, based on finds, the scabbard has the strap slide attached with glue and linen cord (rivets are more authentic, but fiddly, and as I intend to use this for reenactment combat I wanted it resilient) and is then wrapped in a glue-soaked band of linen from the mouth to the tip. The risers are again interpreted from York finds, and are lengths of leather thong glued on. EDIT- some people are really fixating on the fact that I said I intended "to fight with this", so I've edited it to make it very specific that it's reenactment fighting and not whatever they assumed it was. Apparently the blunt blade and round tip in the first picture wasn't enough of a giveaway
A 1.2mm leather cover on the outside, soaked, stretched into place, and stitched with strong linen thread. The linen bands show quite pleasingly through the thin leather, as do the risers. I slit holes under the strap slide after taking this.
The flesh to flesh saddle stitch. This was an absolute nightmare and kept me up until gone 3am, as once the leather is soaked, it has to be sewn. The leather tightens over the rest of the scabbard's structure, which laminates the construction and improves the strength massively.
The final scabbard. Fiebings leather dye was used to colour the leather, and it looks gorgeous. The strap is 3mm leather, made to go over the shoulder as a baldric. It's simply knotted over the slide in such a way as to anchor it. The buckle is a copy of a 10th century find from Norfolk, and the strap end is a copy of the St Mary Bishophill find- also from the 10th century and only ten minutes from my house. The studs are from Burka in Sweden, but the art style is identical to the buckle and strap end. Very pleased with it, but it doesn't have a name. Yet!

burnish the strap, it looks dumb with a clean cut edge.

Bare et tips: ikke bruk farge hvis du lager en til senere. Ta litt fett/voks på så får den den fargen naturlig. :)

I made a new scabbard for my son's mall katana (well, wakizashi when I was done with it). THis is so much better. Favorited for the lesson.

Burka? Or did you mean Birka?
TheNorthumbrian
Whoops. Yeah,I meant Birka, the incredibly rich archaeological site in Sweden, and not the burka. Also big in Sweden...
Theadversary333
I had to make two of these for my Witcher cosplay. Figuring out how to successfully strap two swords to your back snuggly took some time
Theadversary333
A table saw and a belt sander helps tremendously with the construction, though

Thanks! This was a first go- the tip is a mess and the fit is a bit off. But the next one will be better!

I need to take time to make one for mine...
SW00PUP0NTHEM
What is the provenance of the sword? Wouldn't put it past you to have made that as well. US but Swedish ancestry, love this living history

It's a hybrid of a Petersen type C and H. Big, meaty fittings, popular in Norway and Hiberno-Norse regions from 850 to 950AD.

TheNorthumbrian
Plenty of this style found in Scotland. It was largely ruled by the Norwegians at the time.
