Boku no Hero Academia

A rare occurrence of American-styled superheroes in anime. The closest thing to One Punch Man we have. Not only is the source material a smash hit, the studio adapting it (BONES - known from FMA and Noragami) seems to be doing a really great job at it.

Basically anime X-Men: Evolution. I've read the manga and trust me, it only gets better with time. And they're going to make some breaks, so there shouldn't be any fillers. Great character progression and a broad, likeable cast.

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)

Attack on Titan, except potentially bettter.

I think all you need to get hooked is "Steampunk zombie apocalypse".

The art style of Kabaneri reminds me of all the good '80s-'90s classics. A little bit inconsistent between scenes at times, but makes a really good impression.

I mean, even if this nearly literal hype train turns into a trainwreck, at least it's going to look epic. But the characters seem way less bland than in AoT... so far.

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (Life in a Different World from Zero)

Your usual "trapped in a fantasy world" cliche... except LOLNOPE, this isn't a regular wish-fullfillment show, nah. Sure it has a harem cast structure, but so does Steins;Gate.

Re:Zero is a cross between Konosuba, Grimgar, Erased, and Steins;Gate. Or Edge of Tomorrow (All You Need Is Kill). It's definitely worth a shot if you like fantasy, and ESPECIALLY if your'e tired of the cliche types of fantasy.

You know that type of anime where the main character is ridiculously overpowered and wins every fight he needs to win? This isn't this kind of anime. In fact, just to make it clear, the MC of this show makes friends with the Gary Stu trope guy who just can't lose a fight. MC himself, now, that's another story entirely.

If you didn't get any of the movie/anime references, we're talking about time loop here. The MC fails miserably and dies. Multiple times. Trying to repeat it until he gets out alive is one thing - but there's also people he begins to care about...

It's not a battle shounen, but when action breaks out, it's really impressive. And they don't stop to talk during fights.

It's hard to categorize this show, since it's neither drama nor thriller, so let's just call it "fantasy adventure with a twist".

Warning: First episode has two parts, A and B, sometimes labeled as episodes 0 and 1. You can't skip the first part.

Studio Trigger is at it again! This time they've paired with Mari Okada (Toradora, True Tears, Zetsuen no Tempest, Ano Hana, WIXOSS), so you can expect... well, Heaven or Hell. It will go either spectacular or spectacularly wrong meldorama.

The premise is odd but simple: a group of random teenagers gets connected by their wounds, sharing all pain one of them would endure between the group.

Seems like an artsy edgy Trigger version of Kokoro Connect (forced drama: the anime). Should be fun.

Joker Game

Some really solid seinen. This is a spy thriller within a military, late '30s setting. Definitely a rare treat.

Bungou Stray Dogs

Urban fantasy like Yozakura Quartet with mystery added in (detective agency). If that rings your bell, hop in.

I mean, if this season wasn't so PACKED already, this would be an okay-ish popular show.

Mayoiga (The Lost Village)

30 annoying kids/young adults get on a bus to a mysterious hidden village. Judging by the posters, we're in for some cast cuts.

Hunger Games? Lord of the Flies? We're yet to see.

Flying Witch

If you need some comfy slice of life, here it is. It's slow, but nice. Looks good, feels good. A teenage witch moves to her distant family and does her witch stuff. Commence comfiness.

This is one of the shows that is yet to develop its characters (I mean, even slice of life needs some script), but the MC is pretty damn likeable.

Kuma Miko

Pedobear the anime. There are some jokes that might make people uncomfortable, but overall a very funny SoL/comedy show. The pedobear part is mostly a joke dosed in lesser amount than you'd expect, but still more than some could stomach.

It's a story of a country girl (shrine maiden to a talking bear) who wants to live in a big city, but has no clue how. Hilarity ensues.

Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge (Tanaka-kun Is Always Listless)

SoL comedy about a guy who took laziness to another level. Way less edgy or artsy than Oregairu or Hyuoka, and made for the broader audience. Nice and comfy. Some commendable bromance.

Sakamoto desu ga?

Basically the SoL equivalent of One Punch Man. Guy who is so absurdly cool it's ridiculous. Based DEEN keeps redeeming themselves.

Well, we don't really know that from just the anime I think. He manages to get himself killed pretty regularly.

It's pretty clear from the first episode that death is the trigger.

No, it's not clear at all. He never manages to survive an entire day. The main character proclaims it's death, but he isn't reliable.

In that sense, the story thus far resembles groundhog day far more, where it's about growing as a person.

Also, edge of tomorrow is a situation where death is inevitable. He doesn't have the option to ignore it and move on.

It has a pretty transparent harem structure. Its quality is just so high its hard to notice. Rewatch the episode with Faris and her Dmail.

I didn't realize till my second viewing I was so engrossed in the story and the great writing.

I also just feel that the story progression is so good. If we have down time it's maybe two chapters while they set up, then action again.

I love One Piece for what it is, and that is a bunch of quirky characters with stupid powers I love. Boku is doing that, except with 1/2

properly timed story arcs. None of them last too overly long unless they need to. There isn't 18 chapters of Luffy and co. talking about 2/3

literally nothing before finally deciding to head out towards the next destination.

TBH, I'm never going to go through the backlog required to get into One Piece. Academia is easier to hop on.

I like anime but don't watch all of the anime so describing an anime via other anime is so unhelpful.

This is a good point. Try checking the genre's of the shows to see what might interest you. On that point, anime has its own genres as well

If you like superheroes and underdogs winning, watch Boku no Hero. If you like Gritty Steampunk Fantasy, watch Iron Fortress 1/?

If you like muscular men not really fighting, written by a literal fairy, watch Jojo's. If you like watching other people live life, 2/3

Is the third jojo any good (the one with like summoned ghosts)? Liked the first two a lot but the plot of the third just seemed so stupid.

Stands were meant to be kind of a greater manifestation of Hamon (one of their original names was "Ghostly Ripple"). Part 3 admittedly (1)

falls into a really bad "monster of the week" pattern, but stays interesting enough to keep watching. (2)

I skipped episode 0 and actually kind of liked learning things as I went along. You'll understand everything by the end of episode 2.

I understand where you're coming from, having watched 1 first and still really liking the dynamic, but you'll miss a lot of characterisation

The setting was original and a lot of the elements of the show work really well, but the pace and wooden characters do a lot of damage.

that's my exact opinion on it as well. If we got some development for characters other than Hanji and Levi, it would be a lot better.

I mean they could at least give something more to the main characters. Armin kind of has an arc, but it's not coming together well.

Like AoT, did not like Eren. He was the worst thing about the show for me. He spends almost as much time as Goku yelling, but with 1/2

It is already done being made. They made a deal with the manga creator so that anime will stay behind the manga by a certain amount.

Interesting to know, although this is like the third time its been delayed which is really unfortunate to those who wanna see it.

The anime did have some pacing problems. A couple episodes were mostly padding to get the show to end when they wanted. Still a great show.

That's any adaptation though. AoT started strong and quickly became mediocre.

It wasn't BAD bad, just underwhelming. Could have been a 10, was a 7. I believe the proper term would be "overrated'.

1/2 I rate shows on wether or not I remember what happened, even if it's a really decent one. I can't remember Gilty Crown (=7), AoT

2/2 AoT however I remember lots so it's an 8 or 9. FMAB I can rewrite like Mozart could rewrite tunes. Solid 10 in other words ^_^

Well, I never could stand Japanese culture until my friend finally convinced me to watch AoT. Short story short, I plan on watching more.

I don't know if it's just their dialect or bad translation, but to me characters seem way to dramatic about everything.

It was good for a while, then it fell into shounen cliches, slowed down, and became overtalked. I've caught up with the manga and it's meh.

AoT is still amazing, they just finished a huge story arc and you complain about shounen? that makes no sense.

i do worry about the next season because of that tho.

It also failed to focus on Sasha, who as we all know is clearly the best part of the show.

SAO has a main character that gets powers NOBODY else in the show gets, for NO reason. The "marriage" break in the middle of part 1 was 1/2

2/2 Pretty freaking bad, and don't even talk about part two. The show should have ended when the world ended in part 1.

I only watched the pilot of AoT when it first came out and didn't finish cuz it never hooked me in like SAO did.

I read through the news section of the Japanese official site for Sidonia (where I saw it) for a while in search of it but to no avail...

Perhaps I was mistaken, or they removed the post, or I just missed it... Either way though, I suppose we'll find out eventually =)

I know there is "interest" in making a S3 by the studio (or producer? someone "up there"), I just wish we could get a solid yes or no.

Might wanna watch part 4 - stands really come into their own after 3 imo, much more gimmick/thinking fights, less brute force.

It's one of the longest running manga in Jump, because the switch to all new characters keeps things fresh. 2,5,7 are probably my favourites

The story is set in arcs, with a new "JoJo" per arc. So far Jonathan vs Dio, Joseph vs Pillar Men, Jotaro vs DIO is done, Josuke vs Kira now

I've seen the first, sexcond and third then. But not the second season of Jotaro vs DIO. That's where I kinda lost interest
