“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Mr. Rogers

FP Edit: I can’t believe this made it to the front page! :D!!! Thank you for all your amazing comments and to all those who reached out. You guys are the real MVPs. Is this is where I’m supposed to ask for nudes? (Just curious to see if the legends are true). Send me boobs, your favourite recipes, feel good stories... Whatever floats your boat, I’m happy either way :). I hope I didn’t embarrass anybody, it is certainly not my intention to do so. I am currently a student myself and have struggled to keep up financially the last 3 years. While I am lucky enough to have awesome family and friends that have helped me each step of the way, I am in awe to see there are so many people out there in the world who are more than willing to help and share their hard-earned income with complete strangers. I understand exactly how it feels to lose your financial independence and to have to think twice even before buying a cup of coffee. I made this post just because I was overwhelmed with the positive response and as a thank you to all those who offered to give so generously (including all those who remain unnamed in the comments) and those who wish they could give but are unable to do so because of their own financial position. Thank you all for making my day :) You have taught me there can be this genuine, selfless connection between people, even strangers.

It might be because of the hormones but this made me cry. You bastards are awesome. Godspeed @OP

Ok...but seriously, are you still in need of food?

Humans have been looking out for fellow humans ever since we had that bottleneck back in South Africa several hundred thousand years ago...

You seem like a decent guy, please don't be one of those guys who asks for nudes or boobs. I wanna be your friend, not a boob container

This was me in last year of uni. Ate a bowl of soup and popcorn every day, walked 10 km to work to save on subway fare. Lost 50 lbs /1

Finally had to move back with my parents. Still there after 8 years. Wish I had just starved to death /2

Starving is no fun at all and it really fucks up your body. I starved most of my childhood and have lifelong issues now. Reach out OP

My son lived like this for a while. It was more of a burden to me as a father to find out he was hungry than to help. Remember that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually forgot about my comment on this and was thrilled to go back and see how many other people offered help and advice! Yay!

Buy the rice OP.

Good parents are supposed to be willing to assist their children. That's how families are generally suppose to work.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Called my parents. Told them myself and my fiance hadn't eaten in two days. Was told to tighten my belt. @OP - some parents are too shitty.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My Dad brought 7 bags of food for my small family when we were struggling. I had to excuse myself and went into the bathroom and sobbed.

Weight loss related to lack of funds isn't always starvation, I lost a lot of weight when I was on potatoes/rice bc I didn't overeat anymore

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Getting downvoted but it's true. When I can afford pizza and steak I enjoy eating a lot. When I'm eating plain I eat what I need. Truth.

..where the hell are people finding 20 pounds of rice for 10$? The cheapest I can find is 5 pounds for 7.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Sam’s Club has a 25 lb bag for $8.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the heads up on Sam's Club. Sadly that's an hour and a half drive from me, but on the off chance I ever get in that direction,

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

gonna get a big bag of rice. They don't have a costco like membership thing do they?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Long grain rice, 2 cups water one cup rice. Add beans for protein and assorted nutrients. Bland as hell, but it'll keep you alive, and >>

add curry

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Curry's good too

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you can probably grab a 2-gallon container of salsa at your local store for flavor. I recommend Sam's Club, they have stuff in bulk.

White rice and ketchup, white rice an butter, lightly salted white rice. These kept me alive when I struggled to make rent for almost a year

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

White rice, onion and curry and oil.I did that for months. But you gotta fry the rice properly so it has a crunch and substitutes as snack 2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too! My favorite was white rice with soy sauce and fried chopped onion. Sometimes with a can of tuna.

https://www.budgetbytes.com/ this website is amazing, it costs out recipes so you know exactly what to buy and how much to spend. 1/?

It helped me out a lot during college, id plan what to eat weekly and it saved me some money. Plus, some of those recipes are pretty good!

I'm with the lemur. I'll never be mad at my kids for struggling, but I'll be upset if they keep their suffering from me for pride.

8 years ago | Likes 171 Dislikes 0

My parents are always way more upset if I don't come to them for help. But they are amazing, maybe OP's parents feel differently

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not all of us are so lucky, its not pride as so much as acceptance and fear our family members wont help when we need them the most

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The last thing I ever want to do is ask my parents for help. But there have been times I needed to. And they have never made me feelbadforit

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I let my family know what's going on, but I refuse to ask for help. I'll figure it out, they've got enough to deal with themselves.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"I'm with the lemur" is not a sentence I expected to read today.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Sometimes, strength means knowing when to ask for help, rather than not needing any.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know for some people it's not so much pride as not wanting to be a burden.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Being in a tough situation is so much harder when you know it's causing people you care about to be distressed.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My sis is doing this to us, we know she’s struggling but refuses to ask for help. I gave her husband career advice instead that has helped.
