It jumped into hyperspace at the end of Rogue One. Vader had to track it down at which point would have been difficult to know for sure.

Just FYI, there appear to be credible leaks out there of The Last Jedi plot. If you're going dark to avoid spoilers, now is the time.
Doumdidoum
I think we should see the Skywalkers as a medieval noble family, rather than an average american brood. Think GoT, not the Brady Bunch.

And just imagine, you wouldn't have to deal with this bullshit if you were capable of taking the Death Star plans away from ten redshirts.

Can anyone explain a little more for a more casual star wars fan?
Actualvet
Vader watches Leia's ship fly away with the Deathstar plans (as opposed to just suspecting the plans are on her ship based on a tip).

Its almost like they didnt super care about making sense. They also wanted all the heroes to get frozen in carbonite to live for eps 7-9.

My reaction to the last part
Throbinwood022
Also my reaction
Yeah, one of the original scripts had everyone in Rogue One getting frozen in carbonite to survive and defrost during this new trilogy.
This would have been my reaction if they did that
PercussionFish
Really makes Vader seem like less of an ass when he accused Lea of being a rebel.

It makes it that much more ballsy to tell him "I don't know what you're talking about, we're on a diplomatic mission..."
Honestly it just makes me think the Rogue One writers wrote in the connection to Ep. IV off memory, rather than rewatch the intro.
LegendofShrek
Which totally fits with Leia's character

Okay, here's my problem. I think the "rebel soldiers" should have been re-classified as some sort of diplomatic guard. Their uniforms (2)
Aren't practical for military stuff at all, and a diplomatic protection force would make waaaaay more sense in that setting. (2)
Comradesjeltonarmy
The point is that there is no open military except the empire. If they went around purchasing armor and other military supplies the empire
Would know. Also anyone working against the government would be considered a rebel regardless of their attire. But I loved seeing the vader
Scene. It was put in to show why the empire was so feared with or without the deathstar.
valen00
It's a stupid plot hole device. They should have radioed the plans to her ship rather than have her ship LITERALLY THERE.
Holociraptor
They had to have the plans in a physical format anyway to give to R2.
lucasthePlumbusMaker
Yeah but you know...fans arent happy without Vader slashing rebels int bits with the retro looking saber
They could still have that, kill the rebels as he hunts for the transmitter that's sending it to her ship. Doesn't affect the story at all/
but it sets them up for the next movie without needing stupid crap.
Rogue One implies its file size is so utterly massive, it cant be transmitted via normal transmitters.

Don’t say that you will ruin the circle jerk
Ilikecreativepeople
I mean can you imagine the size of the cad plans for moon sized base. It would be thousands of petabytes easy.
Space is big, requiring even modest directional transmitters for high speed data is fine and not a plot hole. It's also something you would/
expect a big ship to have. So they could RX it from the ground then send it to the princess and then all die without creating a stupid hole
longnNoodleDriver
Not according to Rogue One, the only physical copy was given to a rebel who brought it to Leia covertte. Darth Vader intercepted it later
Ironblitz
His point was that it created a discontinuity. He's supposed to suspect them of having the plans, not physically see them taken.
Yeah, I forgot the part that Vader never aware that stolen Death Star plan exist.
That's exactly what I meant and you said it 10x better than I did kudos to you sir, kudos

While I can understand his argument, I have to assume that since all the ships in the movies have names, there must be transponders 1
And judging from the resources the empire has, I'm sure it would be a simple matter of realizing the ship that just fled 2 minutes ago 2
Was registered as the Tantive IV and guess what, this ship is also called the Tantive IV... What a strange coincidence! 4
Or you know, you could simply just track it after it was released from the belly of Profundity...
In either case, good for you for not being friends with that person any more!
Are you implying that someone who would engage in open rebellion against the government wouldn't use fake transponder codes?
You have to remember, at that point Leia was posing as a diplomat to Aldeeran. She would have been trying to keep up appearences. So no
She actually was a diplomat from Alderaan. Before she may have been posing as someone else while taking off with the stolen plans.
I see where you are going with that now. Misunderstood from your first comment. Valid point
